City of Lake Worth still over-reacting and making dumb decisions

Read the latest on what happened to Code Officer, Nick Petrino, when he encountered a missing girl on our city street. Jessica Wilkerson, a known heroin addict, was found in the first block of South D Street with a presumed heroin overdose. She was taken to John F. Kennedy Medical Center.

The city has done everything within its power to marginalize Nike Petrino and now it attempted to dehumanize him as well. You can't and shouldn't have to do everything by the city's book especially when it comes to someone's life on the line. And this is why Nick called 911 when he encountered an emergency. This is why the Code Department and the City in general has a less than exemplary or honest reputation in Lake Worth.

The city over-reacted and then walked it back. Good thing. Nick is a hero and probably helped save her life by reacting quickly and calling 911.

What's going on in our city? Why aren't they telling us about the bond costs? Why do they go after people for trees that they told the owner to cut?

I think he did the right thing. I can understand you need to report it to whoevers in charge but didn't he did? The city should use this to just leave the guy alone already! he does a great job as code officer so just stop busting his balls. he saved a girls life for Christ sake! in truth though if I was him I would just start looking for a new job because sooner or later the city will find a way to get him out and lynn you've been around long enough to know that!

Obviously, we don't know the full story, but if I were him, I would "CALL LEE"

why would anyone contact their supervisor before dealing with the situation at hand. reporting it to people that can do anything at the moment shouldn't be a priority and he should DEFINETLY NOT BE WRITTEN UP OR GIVEN ANY SORT OF DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS!!

nick better keep his head down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They're gonna be gunnin' for him and that's a fact!!!!!!! Hes right just gonna be small things until they fill up the pail to fire him! BS!

This city can be so stupid. A policy to call your boss first. In the meantime, the woman could have died. Nick made the right call.

all in all i hope they just leave mr. petrino alone. he obviously has a lot of public support over this! i even saw a comment on the post from the girls family calling him a hero! if they keep on f&#cking with him its bound to come around and take a big bite out of their arse.

no matter what is said he better just lay low for awhile because a shit storm is about to him due to all the comments im seeing from people on the post. Im sure hes getting a lot of heat for it! I know what everyones saying but maybe he shouldn't have spoken to the press because now he is in the lime light and that's never a great place to be.

You can't live in fear especially when you are a person with integrity. Unless the city has a policy where employees are forbidden to talk with the press, then they can't muzzle people and their right of free speech.

How very disgustingly sad for the city to react this way. To state it very briefly minus all the details: value of human life to the city: zero. Absolutely zero. The chance that what, he might be called on to repeat his story for the safety of someone's life--this presents an unacceptable liability to the city----?? What kind of city are you running for Lord's sake?? The Gestapo against human values??

Has our legal department so intimidated the entire city officialdom with the paranoid ideation that if you save a human life, OMG, YOU MAY BE SUED!!!!!!!!!!

So let 'em die, right. That's so much better than that acting as a flesh and blood human with the right impulse to save a life. What kind of monsters can be persuaded to act like this? Hitler persuaded an entire country to act like this. But he wasn't running a city, or living in a democracy; he was just trying to take over the world. Please tell me we have not become so depraved that official policy is to watch someone die and take no action, because that is better to protect the "city." This is really sick, sick, sick. Have you absolutely no humanity??

And here's the kicker. There is something called the "Good Samaritan Act" that would protect the city anyway. So this reasoning (loosely used) is full of holes.

And thank God we do still have some semblance of a free press. Thank you Palm Beach Post for printing this!!!! That's called speaking truth to power, and it still works!! Made all those silly post it notes on Nick's record go blowing away in the breeze.

Interesting that he is vested in October. Lynn, maybe we could form an unofficial ad hoc committee before that time to submit letters of recommendation for Nick and his actions. By law that has to go into an employee's file. Makes it a little harder to kick someone out of their job just to cheat them out of retirement benefits etc.

Why do they keep going after the good people with solid values? And consistently rewarding the automatons who will spout any lie the city tells them to??

Thats the city policy... Screw over anyone who doesn't fit into their agenda. I for one think it would be great for the city to come out and PUBLICALLY say we decided not to reprimand him and are giving him an award for what happened. But doubt lw will do that... Instead its sad that he has to watch his back for retaliation. =/

I wonder if it will be brought up at the commission meeting tonight?

He should get a award plain and simple. and the police and ambulance for dealing with this. Another overdose. Lake worth more exposure on the real problems

This story went up at 7 this morning. There are now 81 comments wondering what is wrong with the people running Lake Worth.Another case of Lake Worth pulling down their pants and spanking themselves. The people of Lake Worth should not have to put up with this constant embarrassment.Mike Bornstein ,William Waters and Mike Woods need to publicly apologize to Mr. Petrino.

Give him a AWARD!!!

I wonder if they have already spoke with him? If they write him up we strike! Ive never seen a community so united in all my days of living in this town_ this article sparked a revolution in this place

Hell give him a promotion! Or at least just back the hell off him.

I spoke with Nick earlier today. He had nothing negative to say about the city nor did he even want to talk about the city at all when I asked him about. All he kept saying was he was happy the police and fire were so quick and they are the real people who should be recognized, not him.

Anonymous said...

Even though yes he is getting an unreal amount of support i would be willing to bet a million bucks things are unbearably tense for him at work and all this article did was make it worse for him which put a bigger bullseye on his back. Did he mention how things are at work james 8:18?

Anonymous said...

I talked to him briefly and he really doesnt want to say anything about whats going on internally. He seemed kinda on edge, maybe he is getting backlash from the city? But he pretty much said the same thing about the pbso n' fire rescue

Anonymous said...

You would think with all the nice comments on the article he'd want to talk about it. The city must have spooked him...

Anonymous said...

They should have just said good work but next time please call us immediately bc ppl are sue happy. So i can see the citys point but NO WAY a write up should have even been mentioned whatsoever! Whatever happened happened and with the post involved everything is out there. Either way the code officer should be recognized for what happened. This could still be positively spun if the city smartens up and maybe gives him an award or something. Can we make a petition to give him an award?

Nick,

If you read this blog keep your head down they will come after you

Hey lynn,

Do you think Mr. Petrino should fear for his job? The city of lw must be pissed.

Anonymous said...

If I were Nick and I had sick time and vacation time - I'd take it till I was vested! They will find any reason to get him out and he should protect himself this way if he can! If he's not working - he can't be written up - correct?

In all honesty they should just use this as an example to stop messing with him. If they just leave the guy alone theyd prob never hear a peep from him again. It's a pick me pick you situation and all bornstien did was prove it to all that its exactly that when he spoke at the commission meeting
