Border security is the only important part of any immigration
legislation. If you can't physically secure the borders, you're wasting
everybody's time and money. And essentially this is what Marco Rubio said back in 2013 when his bill from the Gang of eight was going to go before the Senate.
Although he had all good intentions to be a part of drafting an immigration bill that made sense, he said then that it was a bill that would not pass and that they were all wasting their time. So for politicians to condemn him now saying that he was for blanket amnesty is disingenuous and flat wrong.
People have planted the seed that Marco lied about immigration back then and wanted amnesty and sanctuary cities. They continue to hold this lie against him. Potential laws go through hundreds or thousands of hours and discussions and along the way anyone can change his mind. That's what happened to Marco.
Back when he was running against Charlie Crist, he said:
I am strongly against amnesty. The most important thing we need to
do is enforce our existing laws. We have existing immigration laws that
are not being adequately enforced. Nothing will make it harder to
enforce the existing laws, if you reward people who broke them. It
demoralizes people who are going through the legal process, it’s a very
clear signal of why go through the legal process, if you can accomplish
the same thing if you go through the illegal process. And number two, it
demoralizes the people enforcing the laws. I am not, and I will never
support any effort to grant blanket legalization/amnesty to folks who
have entered, stayed in this country illegally.
And this is exactly how he feels today.
In one of the debates he said:
“Here's what we learned in 2013: The American people don't trust the
federal government to enforce our immigration laws, and we will not be
able to do anything on immigration until we first prove to the American
people that illegal immigration is under control.
