Message from Roy Beck of Numbers USA:
Two big developments to report. Both make clearer a strong reason why a comprehensive bill won't pass this year (if we keep the pressure on):
The legislation being prepared by Senate & House "Gangs of Eight" behind closed doors fundamentally fails to account for the public's colossal mistrust of government to ever enforce immigration laws. The selling point for "comprehensive immigration reform" is that this would be the last amnesty because the enforcement provisions in the bill will stop future illegal immigration. But the public doesn't buy that.
Rasmussen's new poll found that only 9% of likely voters think it is very likely that the "federal government would actually secure the border and prevent illegal immigration," if Congress passes comprehensive immigration reform and legalizes 11 million illegal aliens. The lack of trust in the government is shared by the head of the union that represents the government's agents who are the ones charged with actually enforcing immigration laws.
In a conference call with news media, Chris Crane, president of the ICE Agents union, said: "Here's my promise for America, if we don't take care of the enforcement side of this first, it will never happen. "The only thing that will happen will be that 11 million illegal aliens will be legalized and 10-20 years from now the nation will again be facing the influx of 10-20 million illegal aliens and all the problems and expenses that come with that."
It isn't that Crane doesn't believe in the men and women agents he represents. But he has complained repeatedly that their bosses in the Department of Homeland Security have ordered the agents NOT to enforce the immigration laws that Congress has passed. Boiled down, his message seems to be: Until you see the laws actually enforced, don't believe any promises that they will be enforced in the future.
