West Palm Beach seeks grant money from HUD

Update: Donna Ross, CRA, says that they recently applied for an NSP Grant.

West Palm Beach did it, why didn’t we?

West Palm Beach is a much larger city than is Lake Worth and its medium income is much higher too-- $48,073 compared to Lake Worth’s of $37,040 according to ZoomProspector.com.

West Palm Beach has applied for a grant from HUD for $38 million and if they get any of this money for which they have applied out of the total $1.93 billion available, it would allow them to rehab and rebuild dozens of foreclosed houses within their city limits.

We have a lot of properties on our books many of which have been foreclosed. They are not surplus and are just sitting there. West Palm Beach wants to encourage home ownership, something we sorely need here in Lake Worth, and they will be working closely with their CRA, Habitat for Humanity and other groups to accomplish this.

This would have been a worthy grant for Lake Worth to have pursued particularly as our goal is to eliminate slum and blight.

Lake Worth is the "poster child" for this type of program. It has been very exciting hearing about the application for the NSP grant.

It is just the sort of thing we need here.

Yes, Donna wrote me and this is what she had to say--

Neighborhood Stabilization Program from HUD. Same thing you were talking about for WPB. We applied for 23.5 million. Joan did an incredible job to put our best foot forward, assembling partners Habitat for Humanity, Adopt A Family, CDC, approved developers, demolition co., housing experts who have applied to HUD before and helped with the ropes, etc. We'll know in Dec. It just went out yesterday. An impressive piece of work!! We've done our best, it's up to the Feds now.

I agree. I am happy to know that someone was on top of this grant. We need this money here in LW.

yes, and hopefully the commission will take back the CRA and we won't end up using the money to re-model the homes of P & Z members.
