Possible Energy Providers for Lake Worth

On April 30, 2012, eight companies responded to the Power Supply RFP that included alternate power supply options. Tonight, the city commission will be narrowing down its choices to a Short List.

The City and Commission has been meeting with Sue Hersey whose firm was paid $413,000. We also contracted with an energy law firm,  Gardner, Bist, Wiener, etal for $250,000 to advise us on-- A wholesale power supply agreement; A generation entitlements transfer agreement; Lake Worth Power Plant capacity and energy sales contract and to keep us out of trouble--necessary contracts for the benefit of Lake Worth. On top of all the professionals,  we have the citizens volunteer utility board that was appointed by the commission to bring further oversight.

On September 5, The American Energy Alliance released a comparison chart answering the basic question in many American’s minds: Are we better off today than we were four years ago?  Read more...  Many residents in this city continue to complain about the high cost of electric so this will be one of the most important decisions ever for the city of Lake Worth, an awesome responsibility by all those involved.

The eight companies that submitted bids:

1) Constellation Energy Commodities group
2) Covanta Energy
3) Florida Power and Light
4) Gainesville Regional Utilities
5) Orlando Utilities Commission
6) Tampa Electric Company
7) UR Solar Power
8) Wärtsilä and Burns & McDonnell

The following companies captured my interest, not necessarily in the order presented.

Number 8--Wärtsilä and Burns and McDonnell
Reliable, flexible, and efficient generation technology but can we afford them? As the goal was to bring down costs, it's been estimated between $60 and $100 million...perhaps we will find out tonight. If we had the money and the management, this would be my dream team.
*Sized very well for the regional load
*Good use of existing assets
*Provides investment and jobs in the community
*Best hedge for future reliability and control of long-term power prices resulting in price stability
*Potential for future combined cycle or dual fuel (including crude palm oil) conversion
*Distributed power generation including excellent black start or isolated system operational capabilities

Number 6--Tampa Electric Company
TECO was my personal favorite.
*Statewide presence
*Expertise in electric and gas
*Meets our needs
*Competitively priced capacity products
*Stable and predictable pricing
*Optionality on term and baseload replacement energy
*Known to have top notch  management

Number 2--Covanta Energy
I was also intrigued with Covanta Energy and liked them a lot. You can't get greener than this. Price needs to be negotiated to make it attractive for our cost reduction goal.
*Located in Doral
*Owned by Miami-Dade and in business since 1985 and operated by Covanta
*Fueled by 3,000 tons power day of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste)
*Largest plant of its kind in the world
*Average electrical output 914 MWH per day
