US House Candidate Mike Trout (CD-21), and Florida Senate Candidate Emmanuel Morel (31st District) say they are cooperating on an exciting new proposal to tap a huge opportunity to give market access to thousands of artists, craft creators, inventors, and even hot dog vendor micro and small enterprises all over Florida, and potentially hundreds of thousands around the nation.
Trout says he got the idea when he stopped at a rest area on Interstate 95 one day, and noticed that there was a lot of (publicly owned) real estate, but very few offerings for the hundreds of travelers who stop in every day, other than the ample restrooms, and a few overpriced vending machines.
He says it just clicked in his mind that what he was looking at had the potential to be a vibrant marketplace and public commerce and commons area. He envisioned a space geared towards serving both sides of a supply and demand vacuum, one that could give many opportunities to many local enterprisers, in a way that tourists and locals alike could benefit from.
"I could see everything from hot dog and drink vendors, to artists and musicians turning this space into a bustling and happy experiment," he said.
Campaigning together in June, Trout said he started to talk about the idea with Morel, who noted that there was a busy Turnpike Service Plaza in his Senate district. A collaboration of ideas ensued, and the two candidates are announcing that they will cooperate on legislation making these two market proposals come alive, Trout's proposal in the US Congress addressing areas along the (federal) interstate highways, and Morel's in the Florida Senate addressing areas along the Turnpike and other state roads as yet to be identified.
Says Morel, "A lot of people mistakenly believe that Democrats and Progressives are somehow not "pro" business and capital opportunities. I'm here to tell you that myself and my good friend Mike Trout are the enterprise progressives in this campaign season."
Trout added that "we have identified possibly hundreds of similar market opportunities in Florida and literally thousands and thousands across the country." He noted that many cities and counties offer roadside vendor permits in some rights of way, including Palm Beach County, "but none with the built in infrastructure of our Interstate highway rest areas and tollroad service plazas. Why should two or three corporations exclusively dominate the potential economic activity as they do, especially as is currently the case in the Turnpike Service Plazas? These are publicly owned properties."
Mike Trout is a lifetime Democrat running as a Progressive Independent (NPA) candidate for Congress in Florida's newly drawn 21st District, and Emmanuel Morel a Democratic candidate in the newly drawn 31st Senate District.
