75th Anniversary of the Lake Worth Public Library
Open House event to showcase the library’s unique history, artifacts

August 30, 2016 - Lake Worth, Fla. - The City of Lake Worth invites the community to an educational open house event in September, planned to showcase the Lake Worth Public Library’s intriguing 75-year history.  Tours, featuring historical artifacts on display, will take place from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Lake Worth Public Library, 15 North M Street, in Lake Worth.

Why:      Lake Worth Public Library building celebrates 75 years in September

Artifacts on Display include:
•    Paintings by Mr. Reginald Sherman Winton, acclaimed painter and muralist. He became a Lake Worth resident in 1922;
•    Woodcarvings by Samuel J. Schlappich, a celebrated artist, photographer, writer and shoemaker. He became a Lake Worth resident and purchased a Downtown shoe repair shop in 1925:
•    A bullet, found on the Men’s room floor of the Library, on a Monday morning in 1942 by Librarian Julia Simmons; A light was left on during a blackout and the town police chief was ordered to shoot it out; 
•    A second bullet, said to be fired from the gun that killed Lee Harvey Oswald;
•    A snippet from the poem, “Hiawatha” painted on a piece of birch bark;
•    Original, newsprint volumes of Lake Worth Herald newspaper editions 1940 – present;
1912 – 1920 Lake Worth Herald editions, archived on microfilm.
