In a surprising turn of events, former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) took to the internet on Friday to declare his departure from the Republican Party.Instead, he revealed his decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming New York House race this autumn.
In a momentous vote last December, Santos was ousted from the House after being hit with numerous federal fraud charges.
“I am officially suspending my petitioning in #NY01 to access the ballot as a Republican and will be filing to run as an independent. I will take my Ultra MAGA/Trump supporting values to the ballot in November as an Independent.” Santos said on X.
In his address, Santos made the announcement that he intends to run for office once again, going up against Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.).
In a recent post, Santos highlighted the disappointing performance in the House following the approval of a spending bill aimed at averting a government shutdown.
