Lake Worth Commission to attend Climate Change Summit in Key West

Comment Up

Another "groovy" fun place to be--

All four of our commissioners will attend the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit in Key West to be held on December 1-3. The event is being hosted by Monroe County and the City of Key West. The annual summit is coordinated by the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, a partnership between Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach counties, their municipalities and other partners.

Don't forget, Bernie Sanders says this is our number one enemy as climate change will lead to terrorism by destabilizing regions affected by droughts, floods, and other natural disasters. So what better reason to attend?

The Climate Leadership Summit is a major regional event focused on facilitating climate-related collaboration and knowledge sharing.  The Summit says that it attracts innovative thinkers and leaders from business, government, academia and the non-profit community to exchange ideas and dialogue at panel discussions and networking breaks.

It seems very ironic to me that all our commissioners are attending plus the city manager particularly when a few of these commissioners have ridiculed Christopher McVoy regarding his concerns on sea level rise. But that's why these summits are held in interesting places. It gets the attention of those not necessarily interested in the subject.

The cost of this little excursion (at least it's in the same state) is over $5,200 (they are all driving by car) and the city manager's costs are undetermined at this time.

The Agenda

The Hotel which is located 3 miles from the airport is Casa Marina, A Waldorf Astoria Resort. They charge $20 a day if you bring your own vehicle and $229 a night for a single room. The hotel, located on the ocean, is booked.

Two Nature Based Tours are being offered: December 1st from 9:00 a.m. - Noon - Snorkeling Field Trip with The Nature Conservancy "Coral Reefs and Climate Change" (reservation required)

An Oceanside Luau, Pig Roast and Silent Auction is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2nd.  The Luau will feature Reel Ting Steel Drum Band.  The band's Keys-style steel drummers and musicians will make the performance an amazing event you won't want to miss.

December 3rd from 1:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. - Conch Tour Train of the City of Key West: Climate Adaptation Field Trip (reservation required)

I'm happy to see our elected officials interested and engaged in climate change and what it means for our community.

Well, when all four of them plus the city manager returns, perhaps we will for once, get a presentation on it.
Personally, I am sick of them spending all of this money. One can go and report back. NO?

Didn't they just go to Nashville and spend over $10 thous? come on, fix a damn pothole.

You are right. But how do we choose? Let's see, because it's Key West, both Ryan and Andy NEED to go.And because it's Climate Change, McVoy NEEDS to go. And because of his bow ties and pirate status, Michael NEEDS to go. Maxwell should stay. That'll save us some precious dollars.

IMHO it's nothing more than a green greed gathering!

If the sea levels will rise and they are working to
prepare for the event wouldn't every building code &
land development regulation change to requiring them
to all be built on stilts, perhaps stop all building
because it'll all be under water?
