Nissan sent out a flier that gave the impression that it was from “an official government agency” recalling Toyotas when all along it was just a shoddy mailer from Nissan.
We hope that someone in
Persuading someone to vote for your candidate predicated on scare tactics and lies brought about by misleading and dishonest literature should not be condoned. I hope that the Attorney General agrees.
The Postmaster General would probably say it was ok because there was no official seal of the City of Lake Worth on it, just another reason why they are operating at a loss of between $6 billion and $12 billion, debt surpassing $10 billion, and a $1 billion cash shortfall. For any business, those are some ugly numbers. But gain through deception is even uglier.
Nissan was consumed by greed. Lindsey and FACT were consumed by power and intense hostility brought about by their own faulty perceptions. Both are wrong in what they did. Now that the Mayor has officially stated that our government must be less political and more functional, I am sure that Rene Varela would agree that deceptive practices such as these should cease immediately. Right, Mayor?
These fliers are nothing more than dirty dealings and need to be officially flushed down the toilet.

This was really low. Needlessly low. Were Mary Lindsey and crew afraid that they couldn't win on legitimate campaign issues? I'll have to see what,if,anything, that the state attorneys office will say on this issue. This is much more serious than just having a different opinion on politics here in Lake Worth. This flier,in my opinion ,was illegal. Let's see if the state agrees with me. Mary, you and your "friends"deserve anything that the state may do to you.Katie Mcgiveron
The state attorney will take one look at the flyer and probably laugh you out of the office. It's a good thing that your definition of what's illegal has nothing to do with actual law.
Parody - "any humorous, satirical, or burlesque imitation, as of a person, event, etc." A form of speech protected by the First Amendment as a "distorted imitation" of an original work for the purpose of commenting on it.
The flyers sent out last year were completely within the 1st Amendment rights of those who sent it. No reasonable person could possibly confuse the flyer with an actual piece of mail from Lake Worth Utilities. My goodness, it's been over 4 months since these flyers went out, can you not just let it go already? Do you really think that 454 people were convinced to vote for Varela because of them? If not, then I suggest you let it go. The flyers were legal. McNamara lost. Welcome to reality.
Someone commits a felony, would we just let it go? Someone robs you at gun point, should we let the punk get away with it? Nissan went to the Attorney general. What makes you so special? No one at the State level is going to "laugh us out of the office." Stand up for RIGHT for a change. We have more than our share of punks in this city.
Maybe the State Attorney's office will laugh, maybe they won't. I guess that the several people in my neighborhood that knocked on my door to ask me why the city sent these things out were, according to you,"UNREASONABLE". Maybe they were genuinely confused by the "City of Lake Worth Utilities Dept. "return address. Maybe the "tons of calls"(an employee of the utility department's words, not mine)that the utility dept got from people around the city were from "unreasonable " people.Maybe 455 "unreasonable " people were swayed to vote for Rene Varela because they thought that the City of Lake Worth was endorsing him.As for "letting it go",well, I just don't feel like letting it go.The postage was really affordable, and it will be worth it to see just what the state says about this "parody".
