The Atheist at Lake Worth City Hall

Comment Up

It wasn't so much in what he said, but that the Supreme Court of the United States on a 5/4 decision, has allowed him to do so. As I told Mr. Smith, I thought it appropriate during a different venue such as public commentary but not a lead off prayer at our commission meeting. Most minority groups are pushy when it comes to their "rights."

 Here is Preston Smith's speech:

Our collective atheism -- which is to say, loving empathy, scientific evidence, and critical thinking -- leads us to believe that we can create a better, more equal community without religious divisions. May we pray together? [pause]

Mother Earth, we gather today in your redeeming and glorious presence, to invoke your eternal guidance in the Universe – the original Creator of all things. May the efforts of this council blend the righteousness of Allah with the all-knowing wisdom of Satan. May Zeus, the great God of Justice, grant us our strength tonight. Jesus might forgive us of our shortcomings while Buddha enlightens us through His Divine affection. We praise you Krishna, for the sanguine sacrifice that has freed us. After all, if Almighty Thor is with us, who can ever be against us? And finally, for the bounty of logic, reason, and science, we simply thank the atheists, agnostics, and non-religious, who now account for 1 in 5 Americans, and growing rapidly. In closing, let us, above all, love one another, not to obtain mythical rewards for ourselves now, hereafter, or based on superstitious threats of eternal damnation, but rather, embrace secular-based principles of morality – and do good for goodness' sake. And so we prayed….. So what?

Mr. Smith, a pleasant young man, told me that there was "something else you may find interesting, we recently noticed that only the PB County Commissioners give their religious Invocation -- with strong Christian tones -- to the exclusion of everyone else. We are consulting with attorneys in order to assess what options may be available for Atheists, Satanists, Muslims, Buddhists, and all other "damned to hell" members of our County. If you permit one, you must permit all."

Note:  Preston Smith says that he is a public school teacher, Lake Worth resident (not in the city limits), and member of American Atheists (atheists.org). He was brought up Catholic in Dallas, Texas and he is 34 years old.

Mr. Smith first contacted City Hall on July 16, 2014 with a request to do the invocation. The City replied to him the very next day offering him four possible dates. He chose the one in December, the month closest to Christmas, a most holy day for Christians. I found it personally sad when he said that 20% of Americans are now non-religious.  I truly believe that this is one of the reasons why we have lost our way and a Ferguson is allowed to happen.

Four city commissioners left the room when Mr. Smith began to talk. Commissioner Christopher McVoy stayed to hear the dialogue as did the city manager and city attorney. Words don't hurt anyone and as repugnant the message, the law says that all sides need to be heard. I worry about this message being conveyed in the public school system.

Triolo, Maxwell, Amoroso and Szerdi reentered the chamber after Mr. Smith's invocation.

Mr. Smith does believe in some kind of a creator-so how can he be an "atheist"? Mr. Smith does not need to worry about lake Worth-All religions, including his, have given an invocation. Mr. Smith needs to be a little less of a bully(DECEMBER ?REALLY ) to Christians .To plop himself down in the middle of our holy time was an insult to many people. And Mr. Smith, Mother Nature does not like people who deliberately insult other people. Many thanks to Mary Lindsey for her later actions.

I didn't see him reciting the pledge to the flag.

The commissioners never should have walked out. What a stupid thing to do.

The commission, on many occasions, act on emotions instead of common sense. It is all right with them to have two of their supporters speak condemning me in every way possible because I disagree with them, but they then boycott someone who is actually allowed to give an "invocation" because it is against what they believe. Did that make sense?

Outrage is selective. I agree @10:02. They should have stayed in place because Preston won this game last night.

I think atheists have a screw loose but the commission by walking out proved once again that they are bullies.

He likes the attention and he got it. Not news worthy, moving on.

It would have been news worthy to you if Cara Jennings or Panigioti had done it. You are a first-class hypocrite still protecting your chosen ones.

Excuse me. You don't know me. As far as The earth first group goes do you think they are making Lake Worth a better place? For the 'chosen ones' I think it was juvenile fir tgem to walk out when this person did wherever he did.

Smith sounds like a hypocrite, he is not an atheist. Sounds more like a recovering Catholic. With the prayer he started:

"Mother Earth, we gather today in your redeeming and glorious presence, to invoke your eternal guidance in the Universe – the original Creator of all things."

Mother Earth is God and our source.

If he was a true atheist he would not have said this or mentioned Buddha or Jesus, etc. God bless him, I hope he finds his true faith and calling. I am sure someday he will hear some good things coming from him.

10:29 "proved once again that they are bullies" What do you mean?

Oh christ, you get this guy, the commission and then mary Lindsay grandstanding. Will it ever stop?

If it wasn't a story before, it certainly became a story after the commission walked out. This commission just can't handle anything or anyone who they don't like. Smith made them look ridiculous.

The Mayor and Commissioners have effortlessly and graciously sat through so many invocations by different denominations than their own and I have no doubt that they would have afforded Mr. Smith the same courtesy. I spoke to the Mayor today and asked her why she walked out and she shared with me it was due to Mr. Preston's disgusting tweet threatening a teen girl with rape. She read evidence of such in an article online that even reveals the FBI is involved and investigating the vile tweet from Mr. Preston's Twitter account. I am proud of our four commissioners who did what any human being should have done who was aware of this man's disgusting digital social media assault. In my opinion he did not deserve their attention, plain and simple. I am sure if it were an atheist who had not committed such a gutter dwelling attack they would not have exited the chambers. I hope going forward whenever another clown jumps out of the wood work, like the Flying Spaghetti God religion member or whatever else. Rest assured they will assuredly pop out of the woodwork and request to disrupt our Invocation. When that does occur in the future I hope the commission schedule a second person who is real clergy to recite a real invocation right after.

There was absolutely no bullying act whatsoever in walking out on a sicko who publicly tweeted a threat of non concensual sex with a teen daughter of a commentator who criticized. Now Mr. Preston on the other hand? I do not see anyone denouncing his act as being a bully supreme. Now that would be a lot more accurate!

Merry Christmas,

Well, one can only hope that their judgment of Mr. Smith was correct. As he told me, and as that article that was sent to me indicated, he is not from Miami. After Googling Preston Smith, there are a few on the Internet, surprisingly enough. There was one governor of Texas with the same name. However, having said that, I have to wonder what school or school system employs him if that twitter statement does indeed belong to him.

Mark A. Parrilla said...

Lynn there is not doubt that tweet belongs to him I confirmed it when I pulled a public records request and saw his email, it is the same as the twitter account @commonalias. Identical to his email address he used to harass our city to get on the agenda.

Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, you know the rest!

Merry Christmas,

Mark Parilla is absolutely correct - this guy is a "duck." I do not pray to Satan and I do not support anyone who believes in teenage rape. Everyone of us had the choice to stay for that invocation or to leave the room. I know which I chose. I appreciate those elected officials who left and I feel bad for the employees who had to stay.

As far as the comments that where made at a previous meeting about the unacceptable images and comments on this blog, put on your big girl panties. You were never mentioned publicly by name. If the actions being described were in fact your doing, you are what you blog. And you too had a choice - you could have gotten up and left or put in a blue card and justified your behavior.

Lynn Anderson said...

Sadie, As difficult as it sometimes is, I choose to ignore ignorance. I don't need to "defend" myself in any political personal attack such as this was. It actually showed who the ignorant ones were and a commission intolerant of free speech.

Also, the atheist has the right of free speech as well. His comment on a supposed "rape"--well, I guess you have to read between the lines on that one.

I guess if you consider the millions of times that Obama has been personally attacked, he would have left the room millions of times. He doesn't pay attention to that crap either.

So, big girl panties are always on here at this blog. I stand up to the BS and also post under my own name. Where are your big panties? Oh, that's right, you personally attack me on your, the other, blog. And that's a joke.
