Labor Day Reflections

Comment Up

Labor Day--
The symbolic end of Summer and the day we used to put our white clothes away for the year. That was another era. We are lucky to live in Florida where any color goes. Many of the traditions of the past are no longer relevant. Labor Day is also the official start of NFL. Don't even try to take that clicker away from Ron Exline or my brother during football season.

We have been celebrating Labor Day for 129 years. It later became an official holiday in 1894. American labor is something to celebrate. It's part of what made this country great. Trade unions were a big part of the solution and helped build up our economy to be the best on Earth. But times have changed and now Unions are part of our problem as we try to compete globally. They force companies to pay way too much for labor and all that goes with it which drives them to look for lower labor costs outside of the country. This has cost our country dearly--high unemployment and companies building manufacturing plants offshore. We call for service and get connected to India where American companies have taught them the game. Instead of taking care of our problem, they try to sell us, in a very polite way, (they have not yet learned American rudeness) more unnecessary services.

This is also what happened to our City and one of the reasons why we are struggling to pay the basic of services and why the City wants to use back door ways to assess the residents more. This Budget cycle, every property will get assessed $102 more--for garbage and fire pensions, not to mention all the other taxes that have been raised or those they want to throw over on the property owner. The City wants to outsource for Utility customer service, thus steering away from Union pension costs that are no longer sustainable and Union rules that dictate the work ethic. We no longer can manage departments without the Unions telling us how we should do it. Fire pensions at 172% of payroll are ridiculous and so is this fire assessment to pay for it.

So, enjoy your cookouts and your trip to the beach today. Take a moment to reflect on what made our country great...a hard day's work for fair compensation and the American entrepreneurial spirit (something Col. Allen West always speaks about), of always striving to be the best in a system of free enterprise and competition.

Have a great Labor Day.

Thanks Lynn! Glad you had a nice Labor Day. We had a drunk Mexican smash into my neighbors back yard and fence with his minivan with Michigan plates and then just runaway from the scene here at 204 North D Street here at 10pm tonight. He also ran into part of my fence. It is still crazy here in this part of the city and these guys are still getting away with a lot of destruction that we have to pay for. Our city leadership and country need to address this problem. I have seen so many of these types of guys kill innocent people it has happened too many times in this area we live in. Today a fence and property damage, several hundred dollars, tomorrow another life. When does it end?
