Elderly Lady Pissed Off

Comment Up
While I was listening to the rest of the last night's meeting on my computer, I got a call from an elderly lady in her mid eighties who lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She just received her notice that day on the fire assessment. I have yet to receive mine. She is very upset about the city taxing her more. I gave her the usual explanation...the City needed to grab some cash as they keep spending, spending, spending and using excuses like, "Well, you all want the PBSO and County Fire/Rescue...we have to pay for that."

The truth of the matter is, the City manager negotiated the Contract with PBSO and it is at a level of several years ago and not costing us more money. Pensions are going up, however for the Sheriff and Fire.

I just got home from shopping at the original Publix where everyone is speaking Spanish these days (drives me up a wall), and had another call from her wanting to discuss this assessment, that she is very upset, etc. She has put her place up for sale. I have no idea what more I can tell her. The City wants to grab your cash. Wham, bam, and thank you Ma'm.

Spoke with a retired guy today who owns a small condo on south Lakeside. He read the paper and said he's had enough. He's putting his place up for sale. I told him to vote out the folks that did this and his response was: "the radicals have full control over this city and qualified people don't win elections. There is no point in voting in this city."

Anon 11:22 please speak with him again and if he has any heart to please remember come November that running away is not the answer...

The power shift has been tipped and there are so many people that are pissed that these "radicals" will NOT remain in office....

They know it, we know it but we have to unite and stand against them. They are going to do as much damage as they can between now and November so pass the word and get the buzz going to NOT Re-elect anyone that is running. (With the exception of Commissioner Scott Maxwell, who one did not want most of this and two has the guts to stand against it but three no one is opposing him and that speaks volumns!)

I know who you're talking about lynn. I will tell you this, it makes me sick to my stomach everytime I read that letter I got. I know people literally holding on by a thread. Sad.

Lynn, your closing sentence should be "wham, bam, and NO thank you ma'am." I too am a long time resident and homeowner (guess that makes me evil and greedy in this town) and I've had enough. I even have a job, so another notch against me. Clearly I don't belong here anymore. I have defended our City for so many years against the naysayers, but this is the last straw. I am done too. Probably won't even bother to put the house up for sale, just let them have it for the special assessment or the bank can have it, who cares. Add another foreclosure to your list Stanton. They said cutting costs would be the focus of the CM and others on the Commission, not raising taxes/assessments/whatever they want to call it. The only reason they are so happy to raise taxes is b/c: (1)No illegal immigrants own property here; and (2) Other than Maxwell, I don't think anyone on the Commission owns property here. How sad that you people voted for a Mayor that has no stake in the City. When Rachael did own a home, it wasn't even in LW. Wait till her full term, it will be ugly (unless you're an illegal alien of course). We live in the crappiest city in PBC and pay the most for that pleasure. Thanks Susan, Suzanne, Joann, Rachael, for continuing the destruction of LW. It's yours, you can have it. I have defended this City for years, but what's the point if those running the City are intent on destroying it further.

I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.

-- Winston Churchill

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

-- Ronald Reagan

I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.

-- Will Rogers and Lynn Anderson

In general, the art of government consists of taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other.

-- Voltaire

A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

-- Gerald Ford

I got a double assessment since our home has a carriage house. I'm wondering if anyone else got a similar double tax. How do they cound dwelling units, if I've got a carriage house but no one is living in it, how is it a dwelling unit, what about a shed or a garage?

Of course I got one for our rental property as well, located in the south end of the city.

So I'm paying $180.
