According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, "a recent approximation by USA Today estimated 1.6 million people used transitional housing or emergency shelters. Of these people, approximately 1/3 are members of households with children, a nine percent increase since 2007. Another approximation is from a study done by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty which states that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2007)."
A lot of the 99%ers are a paycheck away from being homeless. With this depression/recession, the homeless population has remained steady in Palm Beach County. Many became homeless due to the housing situation and mortgage fraud as well as being unemployed.
No agency can give an accurate figure as to the number of homeless people we have, some even sleeping on park benches in Lake Worth and pan-handling in the downtown. A new 60 bed homeless center will open in July on 45th Street. It has been reported by the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County that on any given day in our county there are 3,228 people (2,325 households) who are experiencing homelessness. There is a ten year plan in Palm Beach County to end homelessness by 2017. Let's hope it's on track.
