Announced by the Florida Fish & Wildlife commission, this is Florida's first Gopher Tortoise Day and we have plenty of them at John Prince Park.
The majority of the remaining gopher tortoises are in the state of Florida where the population was estimated in 2003 to be under 800,000. Thanks to development, they are now in steep decline. This is their mating season.

Lynn, thanks for posting this.Especially in urban areas like Palm Beach County,ans especially central Palm Beach County, our open spaces are all but gone. Places like John Prince Park are more important than ever! It's disgusting and pitiful when elected officials like Scott Maxwell think it's okay to destroy a public park and replace it with a for profit baseball stadium so that, according to Scott ,children and young people will have a wholesome activity to do with their parents!I guess Scott never took his son outside to play at a park.Sad that our County and local politicians are so blinded by greed that they will sacrifice our public parks for profit

Thanks for posting this! So sad that we are ruining all of our most precious assets in favor of giving away public lands to developers and billionaires with connections to those in power. When you get Scott you get scott free land for his backers. Not one of those, or a mere resident--you get screwed. We will pay for this for years to come, and he'll laugh all the way to the bank. That's been such a beautiful park for some 80 years. More destruction in the name of "moving forward."

Think people. This is not just about building this park it is about destroying other things. 1.) Our current and near future infrastructure cannot support this.
2.) Our roads cannot support this, more traffic in an already congested areas.
3.) Ambulances will be delayed getting to and from the hospital, critical situation
4.) Our wildlife in the park will be destroyed. This area is the habitat for gopher tortoise's. A vulnerable species being destroyed by a concrete jungle that the greedy developers want for THEIR enjoyment. Lighting of this area will destroy their enviroment.
5.) Peaceful environment for those who work and live in stressful areas will be destroyed.
6.) Many of the residents in Lake Worth would not be able to afford to go to a baseball stadium. They use the current facilities which are free and well maintained.
7.) Nearby airport that has seen several accidents or near accidents in this area will be a detriment to the safety of those that attend these games.
