Bill Hager on Sober Homes

Comment Up

HB 21, also known as the sober home bill, was signed by Governor Scott on Wednesday. This bill was a priority for House District 89 and Palm Beach County and thanks to the support of so many of my constituents and the municipalities in Palm Beach County the bill will now become law on July 1st.

I am pleased that Governor Scott recognized the problem we have in Florida, especially South Florida, and that he agreed there is a need to establish regulatory framework for sober homes. The bill is already having an impact: last month my office began receiving calls from people out of state considering establishing sober homes who wanted to make sure they would be in compliance with the new regulations. It’s a win-win for our communities and the sober home residents.

Sober Homes are nothing more than a cash cow for the operators, they could care less about the addicts or the community where they wouldn't stoop to live.

Sober homes are proliferating in Lake Worth. I'm not sure this bill will stop them. We now have them in our prime neighborhood, close to the water. There is one on North Lakeside Drive, I think the 200 block, and also one on South Lakeside Drive, on the 300 block. Twenty something-year-old girls and their low-class boyfriends can be seen hanging out in front of both all times of day and night, smoking, making out, etc. They couldn't give a you-know-what about the neighborhood as they're just here temporarily. Just hangin out.

The Publix on Dixie is uncomfortable to shop in with so many sober house people shopping there with ebt cards, shoplifting or loitering. It is a drain on the store and a blight on our city. Publix should get rid of the western union, its a magnet for them.

The city could cut down on sober homes by enforcing its short term rental law (uniformly and against all illegal rentals, like vacation rentals as well).
