Cleaning up the garbage and trash
After and during the Street Painting Festival, our trash cans, sidewalks and streets have to be cleaned. Think of all those go-cups today and tomorrow! Aside from the 5 city workers and 6 tomorrow working 7 plus hours at overtime wages, the city apparently outsourced for more help by hiring Image Companies, a commercial cleaning company
based out of West Palm Beach, Florida.
A principled guy was in town who speaks the truth and Debbie is scared
Palm Beach island is home to around 10,500 year-round residents with seasonal residents tripling the population. The majority of the residents make over $150,000 a year. 84% of the housing is owner occupied and there are a lot of notables and multimillionaires who live there. This is a great little island to fundraise and the residents give back a lot of money to special causes.
Last night, Ted Cruz was in Palm Beach to attend a fundraising dinner at Mar-a-Lago, the property of another patriot, Donald Trump. We can always count on Debbie Wasserman-Schultz to damper the party and to give some sort of quip from the Alinsky playbook (Rules for Radicals) of personal attacks. We have the very same strategy going on in Lake Worth when this blog points out the facts or when an opponent disagrees.
After Governor Cristie's appearance in Palm Beach this past January she said, “Republican governors have been touting themselves as the grown-ups and the ones that have the ability to lead us forward. The guy they chose as their leader is Chris Christie, who has been characterized as a maniacal bully by Republicans and who was willing to take out retribution against not the elected officials who wouldn’t endorse him but … his own constituents.” Now Debbie's at it again with her pit bull attack on Ted Cruz, still blaming him for the government shutdown. "Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio embrace extremism."
P.S. Allen West got louder applause than did Ted Cruz.

- 100,000 estimated to view street painting again this year
- Open containers of alcohol allowed but must be sold by the Festival.
- Affidavit of applicant for special sales license:
- Sheriff services are authorized by the City of Lake Worth and the PBSO submits bills at the current extra-duty permit hourly rate and paid by the city.
- The City of Lake Worth has insured the Street Painting Festival for liability up to $1 million and $3 million in the aggregate. Medical expenses are excluded (don't get this) so don't fall down drunk on our city street. You will have to sue the city personally. FDOT is the certificate holder.
- The Street Painting Festival is the only entity that will receive profits from the sale of alcoholic beverages by their permit. In 2011, the Street Painting Festival made $234,868, not including expenses, which took up most of the profits. This is a huge endeavor to bring art awareness to Lake Worth and to make so little.
- The Street Painting Festival is exempt from any taxes
- The Festival did not have to pay an application fee nor did they have to pay for a permit.
- The city is providing dumpster trash service and use of electricity.
- There will be 15 carts and booths and all profits go to the Street Painting Festival, Inc.
- Public benefit is promoting the arts.
- Set-up for the event started at 6:30am yesterday and the break-down is 10pm Sunday.
- This year's theme is Movies
- Free trolley at the Tri-Rail station during the event
- 10am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday in the heart of downtown Lake Worth

Lake Worth's barricades now in the 21st Century

Perhaps some of you have witnessed city staff digging holes around some of the streets and alleyways lately. They installed bollards (pop-up barricades) made by Reliance Foundry to make it easy going forward when streets are closed to traffic. No more renting ugly barricades.

Art Show in Lake Worth tonight
Looking for something to do this evening? The Art & Writing show is going on right now at the old Sun Trust Bank Building, Dixie and 2nd. This is an awards show for young artists.

Downtown businesses are hustling and bustling to get ready for the biggest signature event of the year--
which will be held on Saturday and Sunday in Lake Worth. Hopefully, merchants will make a lot of money, bars and restaurants will be filled day and night and the neighborhood associations will get lots of big tips for serving beer.
Now I will have to hear from some of you saying, "Oh give the guy a break; he's just trying to make money...it's a special event..you're always so negative."

Tables, chairs and umbrellas have been placed in the alleyway adjacent to CJ's Bar and Grill. Someone has closed off the alleyway and are prepared to use it. A source tells me it all belongs to CJ's. The Sustainability Director has no knowledge of this and says, "To my knowledge no one has been given an exception
including CJ's. And we have neither received nor reviewed a right of way use
permit for this area."

They came and protested. There were two town hall meetings. There were months on months of contention and the people spoke. The West Palm Beach City Commission never listened. They never had any intention of listening--just fooling the people by telling them, "Look what we've done--we've negotiated the project down from 25 floors to 22." You see, they had the power to make the decision to allow a highrise to be built on the Chapel By the Sea land, land that was filled in by the State with the caveat that it never be sold or developed. The West Palm Beach commission didn't care about that nor did the developer who hired Kilday & Associates to talk down to the public by telling them that nearly every city around has given waivers to developers.
Commissions NEVER listen to the people. They listen to the developers. They continually make decisions and waive rules for unwanted development or projects that they want. They rule. They are allowed to do that if they believe that the development project is justified even if it is three times what the Comp Plan calls for or in the case of Lake Worth, not even honor an election. With the chapel project, they had GOD on their side. All they could see is tax base. Screw the waterfront. Screw the people they serve. Screw Florida.
NOTHING WAS ethically JUSTIFIED about it.
Now the citizens have filed two lawsuits.

Getting into the spirit of an eclectic Lake worth

No, this isn't a jump start on a house painting festival but perhaps it is a start of a trend in Lake Worth. We are getting some wild colors popping up.
Jump Start--That's the name--what about the action? Does this mean this is the first of more house murals to come? More pizazze? More color? More funky art? More interaction by owners with the P&Z and Historic boards? Or does it mean more owners doing their own thing without any approval? According to a member of the Planning and Zoning board, that's apparently what happened here.

The Debt Ceiling

On the Today Show, Natalie Morales said: "America is one step closer to being able to pay its bills next month."
The most important fact of the matter is that Congress voted to raise the debt ceiling because we need to borrow more money to keep going! $17 trillion in debt. The sworn duty of every elected official is to keep government functioning and pay bills already incurred. However, who says that they have the right to keep printing money and keep on borrowing and raiding the social security trust fund to pay for increased deficit spending? What is wrong with this picture?
Ted Cruz said, "Today's vote (February 12th) is yet another example that establishment politicians from both parties are simply not listening to the American people. Outside the beltway, Americans of all political stripes understand that we cannot keep spending money we don't have."
Politicians continue to believe that it is fiscally healthy to keep on borrowing and ignore their sworn duty to the people they serve.

Take this one for instance. Obama is absolutely right. Kids need to be taught practicalities and how to support themselves in today's world by being open to technical training. We always need plumbers and air conditioning specialists, etc. and all of them make good livings.

Get ready for a LOT of beer being sold over this Street Painting festival weekend. If it's an approved city held event you can now walk around with an open container. This was passed by this commission on September 3, 2013 on a 4/1 vote, McVoy dissenting.
What it says: This Ordinance now allows for the possession and consumption of approved alcoholic beverages at City coordinated events and within the approved event boundaries. Locations to include: Bryant Park, Cultural Plaza, City streets, Beach Complex and other designated City event spaces used in the production of City coordinated events.
It's going to be one heck of a party-time. But the latest City of Lake Worth "rule" is restrictive on those businesses that have licenses to sell alcohol. They have to ensure that their patrons don't walk out with a go-cup if a not for profit is competing with them at this city sponsored event. Does anyone remember this ever being discussed?
The Mod Squad was told by the city of Lake Worth's Events Coordinator that,
"When a non-profit (501(c)(3) petitions to close a street for events, and that non-profit uses alcohol as part of its fund-raising efforts, the other vendors of alcohol within the business district are prohibited from allowing the sales in their establishments from going into the streets.
To protect yourselves from fines and loss of license, you must post a sign at every exit saying that no alcoholic beverage can be taken from the establishment past the exit.
This, and your vigilance, should protect you from any fines or retribution. Please take the precaution of photographing your signs at each exit as proof of your compliance."
