Germany's far-right Alternative für Deutschland just won 43.8% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt

more than doubling its 2021 result and burying Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats, who managed only 17.2%

The party landed 39 of 83 seats in the state parliament, three short of an outright majority. Within hours, AfD's lead candidate in the state was publicly thanking Elon Musk for his "support" and floating "strong and constructive cooperation," while Donald Trump amplified the result on Truth Social and a Kremlin envoy called it a "historic win."

This is what a transnational far-right network looks like in practice: an American billionaire boosting a party that Germany's own domestic intelligence has scrutinized for extremism, a US president cheering it on, and Moscow celebrating a party that wants to end aid to Ukraine and strip Ukrainian refugees of protection.

The firewall against the AfD is still standing, but it is now holding back a party that just won a plurality bigger than the next two finishers combined.

The foreign amplification was immediate and coordinated in effect if not in fact. Musk, who spent the 2025 federal campaign insisting only the AfD could "save" Germany and who hosted Weidel for a livestream on X, posted "well done" in German. Siegmund replied thanking him "for your clear and highly important perspective on the political developments of our time" and adding that if AfD takes "responsibility," Germany "would once again be a place worth investing in."

Trump posted a screenshot of the projection to Truth Social with no comment. Kirill Dmitriev, Vladimir Putin's envoy, then shared Trump's post and wrote that AfD is "the party of reason, cooperation, truth, and hope for Germany," dismissing other German parties for following "Bidenthink."
