NYC Mayor Mamdani hails socialist's Rhode Island primary win as proof Democrats are shifting left
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani seized on a 27-year-old democratic socialist's upset victory in the Providence mayoral primary to declare that Democratic voters nationwide are demanding the party embrace rent control and a harder progressive turn.David Morales, a Rhode Island state representative backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, defeated one-term Providence Mayor Brett Smiley in Wednesday night's Democratic primary, pulling roughly 54% of the vote to Smiley's 46%.
Morales ran on rent stabilization in a city where rents have climbed sharply since 2020. Smiley, 47, argued that rent control could discourage development. Voters sided with the socialist.
