Trump Proposes $5,000 Adult Dividend if Republicans Win Control of Congress
President Trump gave the GOP Midterm Convention crowd a promise that is likely to get plenty of attention.Speaking Wednesday night, he said that if Republicans win both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, he would issue a $5,000 dividend to every adult citizen in the United States.
That is not exactly a small campaign talking point. It is the kind of number that makes consultants spill their coffee and makes working Americans sit up a little straighter. Trump tied the idea directly to what he described as the country’s strong economic performance, saying the nation is making so much money that he could make this promise.
The Promise Was Tied to a GOP Sweep--Trump’s statement came with a clear condition: Republicans would need to win both chambers of Congress in the midterm election.
In his words, “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them,” he would issue the dividend. He credited “tremendous economic success” and said the country had never seen anything like it.
The message was simple enough for every voter to understand without needing a think tank translator: give Republicans control, and adult citizens would be promised a $5,000 payout. For a political system that usually specializes in complicated fine print, this was about as subtle as a brass band in a library.
