The Last Debate

In today's mail, I got a message from an Obama campaign supporter saying, "Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama performed exceedingly well in the final Presidential Debate. He appeared knowledgeable, strong, and authentic, and controlled the dialogue in almost every exchange." That was his biased opinion--Obama APPEARED to have all of these attributes.

We don't want someone as President to only appear knowledgeable; we want him to make it all right. We want him to solve the jobs situation and get people back to work--get people off of welfare--stop spending more than we make and solve the Middle East situation and why people hate our guts, not only there but across the globe.

Romney proved he is not a war mongeror or some evil conservative. He came across as calm, cool and collected with in-depth knowledge of the Mid-East and the solutions to turn-around the problems. He convinced us that he had the answers to turn this mess around. Obama continued to interrupt him with petty attacks. Just looking at the split screen, Obama showed his contempt for Romney, not only in this debate but all past debates.  Last night Obama's contemptuous feelings were obvious to everyone ...how dare you challenge the President of the United States.

Although some of the polls have them neck and neck or even Obama with a slight edge, on November 6th, Obama will have a rude awakening. I can't imagine people voting for welfare over prosperity.

Our downtown is not just for developers; the downtown is about buildings and people. As our downtown is a "walkable" city, those who shop, dine and sit at the sidewalk tables want to be able to walk and talk in the sun, not in the shadows. They want to look up and see the sky and the sun. This is what attracts people to our downtown, not tall buildings that cast a shadow on everything.

Lynn University in Boca for final Debate tonight

Dedicated in spring of 2010, the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center at Lynn University is home to live theatrical performances by the university's theater arts program and professional Live at Lynn series, as well as Conservatory of Music concerts and other university-hosted events.

The Wold Performing Arts Center, with seating for 750 guests, features superb acoustics, a modern lighting system, a bright, spacious lobby and flexible stage space well-suited for dramatic productions, concerts and other cultural events. The center's Schmidt Family Studio hosts smaller or more avant-garde productions.

Jim Stafford hasn't really said much on this or any issue as not once has he spoken in front of the commission during this campaign. In a one liner, he has said that our casino financing is "risky." Well, let's find out why this is risky especially since the Finance Advisory Board, when John Pickett, former Senior Managing Director of the Wall Street investment firm of Labranche and Company (NYSE-LAB), recommended this financing plan that will save the city $3.5 million big buckeroos.

Sludge at ECR

Situated on 360 acres is the East Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility located on Haverhill Road, adjacent to the Florida turnpike in West Palm Beach. There are four cities (Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Riviera Beach and Lake Worth) plus Palm Beach County that oversee this plant that takes our wastewater, treats it and then processes it by removing the pollutants and debris. It is all disinfected before it is discharged.

Now the ECR's board is issuing bonds totaling $115 million to update its water treatment plant that will include a pelletizer plant that converts sludge into pellets that can be sold and used as fertilizer. By building their own pelletizer plant at a cost of $24 million, the ECR says it will save us $200,000 a year every year for twenty years from what the SWA charges and allow us to have control over costs. The SWA disagrees.

Palm Beach County owns 34%.
West Palm Beach controls 29%
Lake Worth has 18%
Riviera Beach with 11%
Palm Beach has 7%

West Palm Beach and one of its commissioners, Shanon Materio, want more answers and have yet committed to it with Riviera Beach and Palm Beach saying "yes." At last week's Lake Worth city commission meeting it was suggested that Lake Worth could be the swing vote on this $24 million decision as it takes 3 votes to proceed no matter the percentage owned. Can you imagine Lake Worth being a swing vote for anything?

As we never hear anything about the ECR,  it's time.

Rep. Jeff Clemens on right side of vote

Believing in giving credit when it is due, today we recognize Rep. Jeff Clemens and his position on the St. Augustine "Switzerland" development or House bill 0979 and amendment 543740 filed late on the last day of the 2012 session.

A video of the debate in Tallahassee taken during the last day of the 2012 session shows state Rep. Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, saying, “When someone files an amendment three minutes before (the deadline) to help one land owner in St. Johns County, I think those of us sitting over here (in the House) have a responsibility not to vote for something like that.” They pulled a sneaky move as it was thrown into Bill 0979 at the last minute, creating a law and giving special status to one land developer. We are unsure if Clemens' NO vote was only because it was at the last minute or because he truly believed that giving special consideration to one land owner was the wrong thing to do, which it is. But whatever his reason, Jeff Clemens was on the right side of the 87/31 vote by voting NO.

The developer made an end-run around the County and went to the State after the County rejected his project for sprawl regulation. Read more... at the St. Augustine Record and how this wealthy developer lobbied Governor Rick Scott to get his way.

"The subject property contains approximately 607 acres. It is just south of a WW 2 era bombing range. It is primarily immature pine plantation, and forested uplands and 284 acres of wetlands," says the article. When the Scott Administration disbanded the state Department of Community Affairs, it announced that one benefit would be that locals would make land use decisions. You can see how that worked out.

County officials say that the "Switzerland" development is a textbook example of urban sprawl — hundreds of houses plunked down in the middle of empty farmland — and the amendment is an example of government resuming its control over local land use issues. I would bet there are plenty of people in Lake Worth who would agree with what Gov. Scott and the legislature did especially those who fought us on Amendment 4.

On another note, a three-judge panel appeared skeptical  of State Rep. Mack Bernard's appeal of a lower court decision affirming Jeff Clemens as the winner of the PB County Senate race. If you recall, Clemens beat out Bernard by 17 votes. Bernard has finally conceded.

Hasner gets SunSentinel Endorsement

Unlike its sister newspaper, The Palm Beach Post, that would not endorse either Lois Frankel or Adam Hasner, The Sun Sentinel has endorsed Hasner.

Voters in Florida's newly drawn and Democratic-leaning 22nd congressional district should feel confident that either Democrat Lois Frankel or Republican Adam Hasner would be a strong, effective voice in Congress, but the Sun Sentinel Editorial Board believes Hasner is the best choice.

Hasner, 42, a former majority leader in the Florida House who lives in Boca Raton, is more in touch with the needs of South Florida's business community, which is a plus in this economy when job creation is every candidate's No. 1 issue. He touts his connection with the business-oriented Broward Workshop and wants to help reform the tax code and push for regulatory certainty so that business owners will have the confidence that allows them to hire and invest.

An iguaua walked across our parking lot and ended up in front of our pool property. Neighbors have told me that he goes for a swim there every now and then. When swimming, an iguana remains submerged, letting its four legs hang limply against its side. They propel through the water with powerful tail strokes.

Patrick Murphy lied last night

Patrick Murphy lied last night. He not only followed the Democratic Platform to a T and used the normal Democratic bullet points, he defended his despicable ads against Allen West even the one where Allen West is punching Granny because of West's stand on saving Medicare for Seniors.

The campaign ads were questioned by the debate monitor who asked both of the candidates if either one wanted to apologize to the other for anything they have said in their ads.  Murphy said his ads were accurate. That statement was challenged by West who said, "Me punching women is accurate?" Murphy responded, "That's not my ad, Sir."

This ad showing Allen West with a gold tooth and boxing gloves was paid by American Sunrise, a PAC funded by his father, Thomas Murphy, who has given Patrick every chance for success by pouring in hundreds of thousands of dollars to defeat West with contemptible, cheap, cruddy and scurvy political attack ads.

We need a Congressman who speaks the truth. Elect Congressman Allen West on November 6.

Blues, Brews and BBQ event in Lake Worth

Former commissioner, Nadine Burns who now works for the Chamber of Commerce, spoke to the city commission on Tuesday regarding the Blues event and passed out sunglasses to the commission and those in the chamber depicting the musical group, the Blues Brothers, that made its debut on Saturday Night live in 1978, wearing dark sunglasses as part of its act.

The Blues and Brews event will be held in Bryant Park today and Sunday, on October 20th - 21st. If you like blues music, this is the place to be with  the best blues music in South Florida, including performances by recording artists Bill ‘The Sauce Boss’ Wharton, Victor Wainwright and the Wildroots, the Damon Fowler Group Joey Gilmore, and many others.
