Obama on Al Qaeda

Veterans Day - The Day the parade went away

Today I want to remember Dennis Koehler who was elected to the county commission in 1976 and served eight years before making a run at the U.S. Congress. A former military intelligence officer who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, Mr. Koehler fought for veterans' rights in South Florida and started the local Vietnam Veterans of America chapter. On many occasions, he was our grand marshal of the Veterans Day parade in Lake Worth, speaking at the bandshell at Bryant Park. He fought his last fight in April 2011 battling cancer.
Blog anonymous comment of the Day: "Are you crazy? Retha Lowe has a husband, and 3 sons who served in the Armed Forces. Stop rewriting history."
Normally I don't give much credence to some anonymous comments here and especially those who take pot shots or personal attacks at this author. But selective memory is as bad as the worst corrupt politician. If you did not attend that meeting when the Veteran's parade was sunsetted, then you have no business calling anyone crazy or telling them that they are liars.
It's nice to have special loyalty to your friends. Because Mrs. Lowe was a long time commissioner and the instigator of the elimination of the Veteran's Day parade back in 2007, does not infer any other meaning to it--it does not diminish the fact, if true, that she has three sons who served in the military. Many mothers have sons and daughters who have served and we thank hers along with the millions who served and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
We used to partner with the Chamber of Commerce (still do) on events, an organization that was highly interested in making money. Back then Tom Ramiccio was president of the Chamber. The Veterans Day parade did not generate any special revenue--there were no booths set up at Bryant Park or festival fees to be made from Vets events. Nothing but hard costs were attached to the Veterans parade, costs that could not be reduced because the majority were overtime costs and therein lies the rub.
The commission's desire was to sunset the Veterans parade by the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2007 and add the Hispanic Fest, an event that generated revenue. That is exactly what they did. It was sacrificing a special day for Veteran's, recognized as a national holiday, in order to make money on a different event to override the costs...pure and simple.
Today IS Veteran's Day, a day that is a national holiday for all those who have kept this country free and the greatest, still, on the face of the Earth. It's a good thing that those in the armed forces don't serve for the paycheck. They serve for duty, honor and country. And we finally restored their honor with a Veterans Day parade and celebration that they so deserve.

City Hall Annex in Lake Worth
Still an old, proud building, the original Lake Worth City Hall also known as the Lake Worth City Hall Annex, is an historic site in Lake Worth, Florida. It is located at 414 Lake Avenue. It is comprised of 13,266 sq. ft and is currently appraised at $1,749,699.
The building originally served as Lake Worth's elementary school until June 1928. North Grade and South Grade Elementary Schools opened the following fall. The building was subsequently remodeled to provide for the Commission Chamber and administrative offices. I remember when it was the headquarters for our police department back in the 60's. Later on it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 18, 1989.
The Lake Worth Historical Museum is located on the second floor, and features antiques, tools, clothing, photographs, and other local and historic artifacts. It is manned by volunteers on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1pm to 4pm. Susan Ona was volunteering while I was there.
Who knows what's going on at the City Hall Annex. What used to be a very active and buzzing building is virtually quiet now. When you enter customer service, all you see is the area where you can pay your utility bill. There are two windows opened to serve the public. If you have a problem with your bill or need a question answered, you move to another area of the first floor where you take a number and are serviced by two employees who appear to be bi-lingual. The interior is clean and neat, what you can see of it, but just about every door is locked to the public.
The exterior grounds are a mess with leaves and berries that have been stomped to a pulp on the sidewalks. The Cultural Plaza is still visited by the homeless who read the inscriptions of Martin Luther King.
The City administration has our City Hall Annex historical building destined to be used for the arts--probably the CRA--and say they will spend $1 million doing it! If we are going to renovate a building and spend one dime of taxpayer money, why not use it for city employees, some of whom are working out of trailers.

Both these houses are on Wright Drive
These people have been told but they keep sticking it in our eye.
They are in the "selling mattresses illegally business,"
working out of their home, no license,
blighting the neighborhood. What in the hell do they care?
They are not fined and no one does anything about it.

Cars parked all over the "lawn."
This house is a total wreck and those who reside there treat it like a dump.
At least the weeds are mowed down.
We have 25? ordinances to enforce code?
Can we take back our neighborhoods?

Everyone has to admit that people are more cruel towards one another these days. They are pleasant to your face, for the most part, but watch out for your back--watch out for the guy who lives in the shadows or even the guy who just wants to believe the worst in anyone and will call you a liar to your face offering no proof of the charge. Rudeness is a way of life and you're not supposed to defend yourself from these bullies. Even Obama has sent out an email asking folks to watch his back no matter what horrible decision he makes. Politics takes its toll. There are always some who believe anything said about anyone and fall into lock-step with the haters who like to play the blame game. Did you ever think that perhaps they are missing some hormones?
Bullying and anonymous cyber attacks are happening with rapid frequency thanks to social media they say. Blogs make it easy for the bullies and this city sure has them. Neighbors "cop" a philosophy of "live and let live" as they trash their property, allow lawns to grow 12 inches high, park cars on their lawn, have yard sales without licenses and tell local code enforcers to stuff it. People buy into condo associations agreeing to abide by the rules and then do everything in their power to break them causing law suits and unnecessary expense, literally telling their fellow owners to stick it. They believe that they can say anything and belittle anyone--right of free speech they say.
Perhaps if we can't remember our past and the gentler society of our parents and grandparents, we should take lessons from chimpanzees...they have more oxytocin which is a powerful hormone. Genetic differences in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) have been associated with maladaptive social traits such as aggressive behavior. It was a kinder nation just a few decades ago. It can be again. Maybe now the cowardly anonymous cyber attackers and back-stabbers can get a little help. Maybe our neighbors will think about others beside themselves. Perhaps people won't be so quick to rush to judgment. Good thought for a Sunday.

It was a great day for a parade--the rain stayed away.
A few photos from yesterday's great Veterans' Day Parade.
A few photos from yesterday's great Veterans' Day Parade.
Where you have politicians you will get politics whether you want it or not. The Mayor gave kudos to this commission for bringing back the Veteran's Day Parade. The catalyst for all of this happening should be attributed to the citizens and veterans who wanted it.
Back in September 2007, the City Commission canceled the Veteran's Day
Parade. This to me was a tragic decision that was initiated by former
Commissioner, Retha Lowe, a member of what many believe was one of the worst commissions in
the history of Lake Worth consisting of Jeff Clemens and someone I personally like, Dave Vespo, who
allocated the money to another event, Hispanic Fest. The people spoke out against this decision to no avail.
As it's never too late to apologize, yesterday Sen Jeff Clemens did just that and said that he was sorry for eliminating the Veterans' Day parade during his mayoral term here in Lake Worth. We got it back and this parade was better than ever.

Fellow veterans,
It is an honor and a privilege to stand before you on this commemoration of Veterans Day here in Lake Worth. Father Delvard, thank you for such an inspiring benediction. Mayor Triolo and the commissioners, thank you for your continued support of this parade, and to Juan Ruiz, all the city employees, the police and fire personnel who have worked so hard to put together this magnificent celebration, a most hearty round of applause.
As a former teacher, I can’t help but insert a quick history lesson here, so please bear with me. Celebrations like this began in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson initiated this salute to honor all those who served in the Armed Forces, calling it Armistice Day. In 1954, Congress renamed it Veterans Day. This holiday is also observed in our Allied countries, most notably in the British Empire as Remembrance Day or ANZAC Day. Wreaths are laid, parades are held, and the old timers especially tell tales that grow taller each year. Unfortunately, their ranks grow thinner each year. History, to me, is more than just a plaque or a monument, it is living. So, today, let’s celebrate that history.
Last year’s Grand Marshal, General Albin Irzyk, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart, among other decorations, commanded the 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division in General Patton’s 3rd Army. He and his most gracious lady, Evelyn, offer their regrets for not attending but send their most sincere wishes for many more fine days like this. And these same heartfelt wishes go out to all veterans.
Lake Worth’s American Legion Post 47 is full of pride to have as its commander, Herm Apol, a Navy veteran of both WW2 and Korea. Herm!
Dean Dudgeon climbed the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc on D-Day and trekked across France to take part in the Battle of the Bulge. Fern Violette says he was never colder in his life.Battle of the Bulge Association members are present today, a lot nicer weather, huh?
Bob Perry, a local lad then, is now in his 90’s.George Morin is unable to be here with us today and we miss him.I particularly miss Frank Smith, a Silver Star winner on Guadalcanal.
So, teacher mode again, who are the other WW2 vets here? Please raise your hands to be recognized and thanked.
To our fellow American Legion and VFW Post members, welcome and thank you. Knights of Columbus, I know there are veterans in your ranks, and thank you for your presentation of the miniature flags we see all around.
Does it seem that I use the words “Thank You” quite often. None of us can ever say that enough.
Korea, the so called forgotten war, will never be forgotten by those who endured there. Will those vets please raise their hands?Thank you
Viet Nam was where I became a combat veteran. We never lost on the field of battle and don’t let me hear anyone say WE didn’t win. I’m sure the Nam Knights and Legion Riders will help me with that. Will my brothers and sisters please identify yourselves?Thank you
Desert Storm, 2nd Iraq, and Afghanistan: Those who haven’t served there will never know of your heroism. Thank you
If I failed to mention an individual, a group, or a campaign like Lebanon, Granada, Panama, Bosnia, Kosovo, Somalia, and others, up to today’s fight against Al Qaeda, it’s my fault, not of the organizers. Thank you,
To those veterans who served in times not designated as a campaign, you cold war veterans, you were on the line and took part in the greatest victory since VJ Day, when you helped defeat communism. Thank you.
To the young men and women in the Junior ROTC programs at Lake Worth and Forest Hills High Schools, thanks to you and to your instructors for your awareness of current events and possible future service to our land.
DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY
Is today’s theme and it’s fitting since DUTY was the operative word for all the above.
From General MacArthur’s words, it is the soldier above all who is required to sacrifice, as all our honored veterans, past and present, sacrificed.
Please remember it is and always will be the soldier who prays for peace since it is the soldier who suffers and bears the wounds and scars of wars.
But rest assured, that from that sacrifice comes a new level of commitment to make our nation a more perfect place. For this we owe a standing ovation to our veterans.

Crime escalating in Lake Worth
Comment Up
With so much crime happening within our city, the PBSO is training at Bryant Park. Good thing too as Lake Worth citizens are subjected to drug dealers, thieves, murderers, houses of prostitution, scum balls, you name it.
According to a source, just last week Dixie Highway had a snatch and grab going on--a gas station, a cell phone store where the thief grabbed an I-Phone 5 (I-Phone 5's are worth anywhere from $200 to $800) and then later Walgreens at 10th and Dixie was robbed.
What it will take is more and more businesses and home owners protecting themselves. A panel of Florida legislators with our own Dave Kerner on the committee, easily defeated an effort to repeal Florida's "stand your ground" law this Thursday. While the House Criminal Justice subcommittee voted against the "stand your ground" repeal, it voted in favor of a different measure that could allow people who fire warning shots to avoid being charged under Florida's "10-20-Life" mandatory sentencing law. See CBS News.
There is so much crime in Lake Worth and none of it is talked about...bad for business...bad for the "vision" -- criminals know how to play the game. We pay an unaffordable fortune for reactive policing but when push comes to shove, we are all fooling ourselves. "Protection" is dying a rapid death. Stand your ground.

Water Back-Flow Valve Theft
Deadbeats are everywhere and we have our fair share. Recently there has been a rash of commercial irrigation and domestic water back-flow preventers stolen and sold for their scrap metal, particularly brass and copper. It has been reported to Lynn's Little bit of Trivia that this is happening with frequency in Lake Worth.
Last year thieves were stealing the brass sprinkler caps from my irrigation system. Now, they don't seem to be bothering with the petty crime...they are going for the more lucrative stuff.
Thieves in cities across the country have posed as city employees wearing orange vests and have cut off the valve to the preventers using a saw. The whole process can take less than two minutes. These thefts have occurred in broad daylight and at prominent and visible locations. If it is stolen, replacing it is very expensive and can cost as much as $3,000 to $6,000. If some idiot removes it, it will also interrupt water service for your property as well as create possible water damage caused by the water running uncontrolled through the open connection, so says On Call Repair and Maintenance.
Keep your eyes peeled for any workers around water back-flow valves. Also, we should look into getting protective cages with a lock. Read more...
