No review; just a contract.
Back in May 2013, there was some sort of a review by the Commission on Michael Bornstein. Actually it was no review at all but a cheerleading session for the manager this commission hired after they fired Susan Stanton on December 6, 2011. Stanton was a manager who was publicly and extensively reviewed, the first one in my memory with Scott Maxwell having a thick bound book (fuel for his fire) with everything imaginable about Ms. Stanton in order to publicly humiliate her.
As I said back then, "We never found out one thing about Bornstein's first year other than we were told that the
employees like him, the public likes him (one referring to the review as
a "roast") and so does the commission. Commissioner Amoroso even jokingly
said, 'He is sexy'. We were not told how any commissioner rated him or
his own self-evaluation during Unfinished Business. Perhaps he revealed
that at the end of the meeting. All we knew was, he's a likeable fella because that's what they told us."
What we see--crime, slum, blight, and the lack of
transparency, short meetings and decisions being made out of the
knowledge of the public. We have found out that he has no stomach for lawsuits as most
all have been settled for unimaginable amounts of money. He purged all of Stanton's city manager weekly reports and he has given none. But then, as
the mayor said back then, it is a "trickle down" management style. Who is at the
top of the organizational chart that directs the style? The Commission and they don't want the public to know anything. Who is above the Commission? Well, it's the public but you know about our importance.
Since that first year, we have seen Mr. Bornstein in action. He's low-key but as political as they come--going after residents in this city, even from the dais, and throwing them to the wolves. He even went after God Almighty--the Common Ground Church. He still gives no manager reports--nothing has changed. He meets with commissioners one-on-one and clues them in. City Hall is not the least bit transparent and it doesn't get better. One thing that HAS changed--he doesn't wear his bow tie as often as he did in the beginning.
Now Mr. Bornstein's contract expires on April 16 and is up for a two year renewal. He makes $135,000 a year, gets a $500 a month car allowance and we have been told that he lives only a few blocks away at The Lucerne Condos; the City contributes 10% of his base salary into a retirement account; he gets three weeks vacation and five months severance as well as life insurance.
I guess tonight is the night for another love fest.

Mr Born stein has done a stellar job as our City Manager. He has made me feel like LW does have a future and will come out of the darkness of the Stand on Era.
Lake Worth has been around for over 100 years. It was here before Bornstein and will be around for anotehr 100 years and more. What has he done? Oh, forgot, secret meetings.
No sir we will be incorporated by West Palm if the Cabal gets power again. Golden and Cara leave town you are losers. .
We will NEVER be incorporated by
West Palm beach. Did you "learn" this over on Wes' blog? The "cabal" as you put it, is not Cara Jennings or Jo-Ann Golden. They conducted city business in the SUNSHINE with a lot of citizen input. We know who the people are who are involved in "plots" to steal our beach and grab the cash. You have it mixed up, anonymous.
I'm neutral on the CM, but I sure would like to hear more from him. He doesn't respond to citizen questions (unless you are part of a favored group) he has even said that he doesn't work for the citizens (technically true) and its not his job to answer to us (also technically true).
So when you've got an issue with a department and you've tried to work the system, where the heck are you supposed to go if the CM ignores you?
It's been three years. You're not going to get anything more out of him than what you have already received over 3 years. Nothing. The C runs the city. If he doesn't have the answers, who does? Juan?
Let's give the city manager some tests as part of the evaluation.
1) Let's see how fast he can reverse the cc vote on ignoring the charter referendum.
2) Let's see how fast he can remove an illegal banner hanging off the top floor of the Gulfstream Hotel.
3) Let's see how fast he can stop the ITN.
Then let's talk about extending his contract.
Yeah, it is high time he takes off that riduculous bow tie and gets down to work. Sorry...but I find it hard to take. Oh I better shush....I might be called a racist! LOL
I think he's done a great job. Man what a difference since Stanton was on the job. Lw has become one of the most desirable cities in the county, before Mr. Bornstein, we had gangs running the town. Now, wow, what an improvement.
Last night it was pleasant to see so many residents come out and speak on behalf of Mike. The only bitch was that he doesn't give a "City Manager's Report". Since when do YOU demand how an administrator, any administrator, runs his job. Just because Stanton ran on at the mouth (and e-mail)adnauseum doesn't mean Bornstein is required to do so. The rise in property values could be seen as a sign he is doing or at least supporting the right things. He supports and is personally involved in EVERY worthwhile positive Lake Worth event.
Seeing how mean spirited the dark side can be, I don't blame him for not returning e-mails which cannot be answered to the sender's satisfaction.
Every e-mail I've sent has either been answered or forwarded to the proper person for the answer.
It appears you all can't stand stability and REAL progress in Lake Worth. You pine for the anarchist rule and think you filling the ranks back up.
You talk about the rise in property values as if he actually had something to do with that? You all are in your own reality.
On the Light Side of Reality
The rise in property values is due to the economy turn around, I do hope he's not taking credit for that.
I'd like to hear some reports from him since he runs the City. Not necessarily every meeting, but maybe once a quarter. And I would especially like to hear him talking about crime and how he is working with PBSO to address this growing issue.
Have you asked him?
Mr Bornstein may have had had much effect on rising property values, but he has had a long list of accomplishments and fixed a lot of problems Stanton caused.
Like what?
Yes, I have asked the CM about the crime and PBSO issues, I've not gotten a response. I've actually asked him several times over many months. I think he only responds to select people.
How many times a week does Bornstein chow down at Callaro's steak House on a taxpayer paid tab? The guy should really pay for his own lunches. We pay him enough.
