Public commentary gets shot down by Lake Worth Vice Mayor Maxwell who wants to stifle free speech

Lake Worth City Commission Meeting
April 21, 2015
By:  Laurence McNamara
I read attorney Goddeau’s statement that “we may be able to get around the 19 year, 364 day limit of the 2004 Beach Protection Charter Amendment” and it is shocking.

As an attorney, she is aware of Legislative Intent.  Courts give great consideration to it when actions are taken that are opposed to that intent.

This 2004 amendment was not a citizen initiative but was placed on the ballot by a unanimous vote of the Commission to protect against private development at the beach and approved by a 9 – 1 margin by the voters.  The Intent of the Commission was very apparent and the support of the voters overwhelming.

Attorney Goddeau’s statement shows her transparent attempt to subvert the will of Lake Worth citizens in favor of City Manager Bornstein, Mayor Triolo, Vice Mayor Scott Maxwell and Commissioner Amoroso’s attempt to destroy our beach park by allowing private development there.

One of you three commissioner members need to join Commissioner McVoy and Commissioner Maier to reject this plan and follow the will of the people.

The above public commentary drew the ire of Vice Mayor Maxwell and he asks that the mayor stifle free speech. Here is his comment:

"I'm all for folks dropping off comment cards and not being here and having you read them but you know, just like when folks come up and give their verbal presentation sometimes you have to redirect them--the way they're commenting. I think when you're reading some of these comments and there obviously is some shock to be taken into the individual's personalities here, perhaps you should omit those comments. You know, Larry McNamara's comments, I guess he picked three of the five of us when he felt we were doing something he didn't like. I don't know where he got that but I don't know, it must be the water over on Lakeside."

The biggest bully there can't take any criticism, right? Boo, hoo, hoo.

First he calls all of us, who didn't vote for the 30 year bond, racists and now he pulls a "king" move and requests that he not be forced to listen to the peons who dare to speak out against this plan to ruin our beach front park.

Laurence McNamara seems to have struck a nerve in un-elected Commissioner Maxwell's plan to ruin our beach with private over-development. His attempt to suppress the record shows he is more interested in protecting Hudson Holdings and their devious plan than representing Lake Worth's citizens.
He and his 2 cronies, Mayor Triolo and Cmr. Amoroso walked into office without a vote of the people.
I think Mickey Mouse will be able to beat any of them in the 2016 election.

Commissioner Maxwell does not know Mr. McNamara very well. No one calls him by a nickname. He had every right to say what he said. That is what meetings are for. With all the damage that the city did against his wife, I am amazed that he continues to have grace under fire and is always respectful.

Perhaps it is the water. Mcnamara is physically fit and smart as a whip.

Mr. Maxwell, where was your outrage when people like Mark Parilla, Loretta Sharpe, Bob Leppa and Peggy Fishbottom got up and insulted private citizens? Scotty, who in the hell cares if you're "sick and tired" of what the citizens say? Your only job is to sit there and LISTEN to the citizens. It is their only, very limited time time to speak to their elected representatives. And YES Scotty, you represent US, not yourself or the people flipping coin at you.
In the future show some damn respect. Mr. Macnanmara's name is not "Larry" any more than yours is "Scotty". And Mr. Maxwell, PLEASE do us all a favor and just SHUT THE HELL UP !! Jesus Christ !Where is your outrage at a city attorney who thinks it is OK to just say basically"Fuck the laws in this town"? Why the hell have you NOT LISTENED to the audio of the previous ITN meetings? How are you supposed to make an informed decision? What will you base your decisions on,anyway? The person who can buy you the most beer at Daves? You are a pitiful , disgusting windbag SCOTTY and your ass is going to get kicked further than Szerdi !

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I also think it is disrespectful to gather a bunch of blue cards ahead of time to have the Mayor read my thought to a chamber full of people who have taken time out of their busy schedule to be there and sit through a bunch of BS to have their say. It would be understandable if Larry was sick, in the hospital or asked some one else, like minded, to read his comment.

Just because he would have to drag Dee with him and risk another spectacle does not give him the right to "make" someone who doesn't agree with him have to read his thoughts.

Well, 9.06 am, that is how the City has set it up. You are required to drop off a card in order to speak. And if you are not present by the time public comment rolls around its read into the record.

This is how the City wanted it, you can't complain about the system just cause you don't agree with the comment.

@9:06--As far as someone turning in a comment card who takes the time to enter city hall to deliver it to the mayor or to the city manager and cannot stay because of some other business, what is your big problem with that? If it were to compliment this "visionary" in some way I am rather sure you would not object.

Also, there was never a "spectacle" with Dee...no one was in the room other than Laurence. The only tragedy was what the CM made of it and who he incited to charges of racism which was a poor display of city leadership.

anonymous above at 9:06. What is disrespectful is your continuing to call him Larry when that is not his name and he doesn't use it as a nickname. It's sort of like you mispronouncing Ryan Maier's (MY-ER) last name. That's on purpose too and disrespectful.
