Public corruption

Comment Up

Someone just asked me what the four commissioners on the Lake Worth commission were getting out of this by not honoring our vote and instead voted in 65 feet in the LDR's instead of 45 feet, the number of feet that was decided in the March election.  Good question.  I can't figure it out at all. They have given us all a song and dance and have skirted around all reason.

The Commission and those wanting 65 feet made it out to be all about a hotel when in reality the Charter Amendment affects the entire downtown right now--with them passing the LDR's to 65 feet, a builder can develop anywhere on Lake and Lucerne to 65 feet...another building as tall as the Lucerne. Nothing precludes a builder to buy up an entire block and build to his heart's content.

But we do know that people are still getting arrested for public corruption. Take the Mayor of Sweetwater and the Mayor of Miami Lakes as examples who were just lead away in handcuffs. One even used his position as president of the Florida League of Cities. I mean now, who can you trust?

I usually agree with much of what you tell us about the city but I feel as if you trying to come up with as much as you can to scare the public at a time when the city is in real trouble with crime and blight. Do you realize that homes are selling for less than $35,000 in some of our neighborhoods yet your focus is on stopping the addition of 20 feet off the top of a building that no one is coming to build. Now you are telling folks that someone could buy a whole block and build anything they want. The only folks coming to our city are drug rehab centers, half way houses, drug addicts, prostitutes and more rentals. A 65 ft hotel will destroy the look of our city? We already have a closed 65 plus foot hotel and the city looks just fine. Wake up Lynn, your energy should be used to fight a real problem instead of one made up.

9:28--I have been writing this blog for nearly 5 years. I write on a myriad of topics, nothwithstanding slum, blight, crime, property values, rentals, affordable housing. etc. Where have you been? Stop trying to be insipid and reduce the importance I put on this issue and dunk it in the toilet.

This election was more than a hotel. I said that in this blog but I guess you just don't want to grasp the facts.

My energy is being used to support our basic right of voting under a Republic form of government and those results being counted. You diminish that? Are you a citizen?

"I can't figure it out at all".
SO I'LL JUST KEEP LYING ABOUT IT.
Thank you for summarizing "your" blog.

If you are going to quote me, don't take it out of context.

Give me concrete examples of "lies."
LOL.

I'm getting to you because you are once again resorting to name calling and lying, the only things you do well.

The anony poster above has to be that other blogger who just has to be right all the time, glorifying himself constantly as some supreme authority. What a total bore. I think he was behind a lot of the terrible decisions in this city, buildings that are now bankrupt or in foreclosure. He also won't fess up to the Tri-Meeting and what was agreed to on heights in our downtown. If that isn't corruption, what is?

where is weetha when we need her. maybe one of her riddles can explain your post. it is difficult to take this lawsuit seriously when you drive around and see a crumbling city.

Do YOU value your vote? Let's not keep changing the subject.

It truly is about the vote, these detractors from the issue of this commission disregarding votes are the same pathetic idiots would be raising bloody hell if the shoe was on the other foot. It is really a sad illustration of how the public at large is willing to overlook basic human rights as long as they have what THEY want.

Whatever side of this issue you are on, you should be outraged that your commission is taking it upon themselves to direct the city at their own will. There is no public directive to overturn this vote and this "law" they cite hasn't even been proven to be valid or constitutional.

As for what they have to gain personally, can you say kickbacks? Take a look at land ownership records and who does business with who in this town. It isn't that hard to figure it out.

yes i value my vote, but it was overturned and that was the opinion of our lawyers firm and two other cities lawyers. no matter how you want to confuse this, it is only about three parcels and twenty feet. this is a silly battle considering all the things more important in this city. i am not going to attack anyone personally, but many of us are unhappy with you allowing such vile personal attacks on our neighbors.

It has NOT been overturned yet, not legally speaking anyway. If it's such a silly battle, why are you battling?

I am for the extra heights in the Hotel District ONLY East of Federal Hwy. I worked hard to win the hearts and minds of voters and we came up short.

I have not changed my mind and know that many people I spoke with were lied to about how if this doesn't go through, "you could have a 65 foot tall building right next to your house".

I also spoke with many "Yes" people during the height (pardon the pun) of the campaign who thought the extra height in the Hotel District, where other like height building already exist, was not only a good compromise, but still achieved their (and my) goal of not having any more 65 foot tall buildings in the REAL downtown which is between Federal and Dixie.

But I am sure if the law recently passed is found unconstitutional, the City Attorney will be the first in line to make the proper adjustments to recognize the Charter Amendment the people voted in favor of. But only when THAT time comes.

I will also be on YOUR side, not because it's a good idea to lower heights in the new Hotel District, but that I also believe your vote should count.

But until you can find any legal authority that states your assertion is correct, this will all remain just a bunch of catterwalling by a bunch of anti-development, anti-business and anti gentrification cave (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) dwellers.

In West Palm Beach, hotel developers are willing to pay millions more to be able to go above the height limit of the City ordinance.
How much do you think a hotel developer would be willing to give to a Commissioner or Commissioners to get him two extra stories?
This is Corruption County, right?

Actually, that is not far fetched although I don't know one person who used that line. I can think of the first block of S. Lakeside or even the 2nd block or going all the way up to Federal from 1st Ave South and the side streets there..

Also, one again--the Charter Amendment was initiated because you voted to raise the heights in the LDR's in the downtown area. We then petitioned to change the charter to 45 feet. you Are just not quite getting this.

it is a silly battle on your part. how you allow such attacks on our friends will ultimately cost you in future elections. how you and your supporters talk down to volunteers who really try to help this city will not be forgotten.

Hey, I invite you to move to Ft. Lauderdale. With this commission we will/could NOW possibly have 6 story buildings to look up to throughout the downtown. We're not just talking about the block at the Gulfstream or east of Federal.

So again, move to Ft. Lauderdale. And how about honoring the vote instead of those people lined with developers who only want to make $$$ and get the heck out of town off the backs of taxpayers who will have to pay for all the additional infrastructure and cost of services?
