Why Greenland is so important

Interior Sec. Doug Burgum — Greenland and Venezuela Are Strategic Priorities for Defense and Energy

In an appearance on Breitbart News Daily, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum made the case for Greenland’s strategic value to American national security and Venezuela’s potential to re-anchor U.S. energy dominance in the Western Hemisphere, casting both regions as crucial to President Donald Trump’s foreign policy and economic agenda.

Burgum likened the acquisition of Greenland to historic U.S. territorial expansions. “President Trump understands that the same way that Thomas Jefferson understood the Louisiana Purchase was going to change the course of our country,” Burgum said, drawing another direct parallel to Seward’s purchase of Alaska, which he described as “a resource that is for us today.”

While Greenland remains a self-governing territory of Denmark, Burgum questioned the intensity of Danish attachment to the island, noting, “I’m guessing that the vast majority of people in Denmark have never been to Greenland and have no plans to go.” He suggested that Danish reluctance might be tied to “a holdover of colonial pride.”

The United States "accepted the legal obligation to defend against any attack" on Greenland in a 1951 treaty with Denmark. It has had bases there since the Second World War. It costs us multi-millions a year defending Greenland and ultimately the United States.

Greenland is the center of U.S. defenses against Russian and/or Chinese nuclear missile attacks. At Pituffik Space Base they have a runway, a seaport and a lot of radar and gigantic satellite dishes.

U.S. Space Force Guardians operate the early-warning radar system to spot intercontinental ballistic missile threats and sea-launched missiles coming out of Russia, China or anywhere else.

The squadrons also provide tracking and command and control for U.S. satellites and all other objects up in space, such as China’s 1,300 satellites. America would be blind without this surveillance.

I didn't know there were u.s. bases there. so if we have military people already there, why make it the 51st state?

To defer China and or Russia from invading it. It's a matter of our national security and it will cost about $700 billion to buy it.

Im hoping that after we take over greenland we go get canada and maybe even mexico. our national security would be great and we have the money to buy them all. why not. we need more land and more states.

@3:27,,,Is that a serious comment? Greenland is srategically important because of our national security and the Russians and Chinese buzzing around there. Canada and Mexico are not. We've already secured our borders to a lare extent. Illegal immigration across the United States' Southwest border has fallen to the lowest level in 50 years as President Trump has secured the nation's borders

Trump taking Greenland will destabilize NATO and result in Putin having more strength to do as he pleases in Europe.

@10:39...says who? Why?

It's pretty obvious that Europe is united against it. 4 or 5 nations have sent soldiers to Greenland as an act of support and their statements are very clear that they stand united against this attempt to take over a sovereign nation in their backyard. Trump has made it very clear that he has no use for NATO but our one-time allies still consider it very useful as a buffer against Putin's aggression,

Foreign counries sent 37-38 soldiers. Trump is NOT "taking over" a soverign nation." Greenland is not a fully sovereign country; it's a self-governing autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump has offered to buy it. There is a difference in "taking over" and purchasing.

He's threatening military action. He's said it can be done the easy way or done the hard way. These are his words, not mine. I'm not sure who you're relying on for your info but the citizens of Greenland and indeed all of Europe are extremely upset about this. There were large-scale demonstrations in Greenland and Europe yesterday.

The reality of this is that Europe is taking Trump's aggressive talk very seriously. The US is now being compared to the more aggressive and militaristic nations of the world.

@7:46...threats are a negotiating tool and not the same as doing. Glad these socialist countries are taking it all seriously...that is the purpose. Not interested in what they think or where you get your news.

I'm just letting you what's actually happening versus what you think is going on because you live in a right wing news bubble. Trump is in the process of destabilizing the world and undoing decades of alliance building. America no longer has the friends it used to and our one-time allies are now looking elsewhere and to each other to protect themselves from their traditional enemies and, now, the United States.

Now you may not think that's a big deal because the entire world (except for the U.S.) are a bunch of socialists and commies and also because Trump thinks it's okay. But the reality is that the U.S. needs our friends and our trade partners.

This Greenland thing is going to be Trump's undoing. Not with his U.S. based supporters. They do whatever he tells them to do. But with Europe and what used to be our other allies. BTW, the AfP is also criticizing Trump. Europe doesn't like to be bullied and held at gunpoint. They learned their lesson almost 100 years ago. They aren't going to go through it again.

But, like you said, who cares what they think. The only thing that matters is what Trump thinks is right.

@8:07...tired of the BS. Stop listening to Trump haters and weak leaders from foreign countries. We have the number one economy in the world. We are not puppets for Trump but you ARE a puppet for Trump haters. You should be so proud to go against your country.

Trump has several tigers by the tail. You know how that works out?
Why are you defending this insanity.

@2:12...please be more specific with your opinion.
