Justice Department investigates Tim Walz, Jacob Frey over immigration agent obstruction claims

The Justice Department has reportedly opened a criminal probe into Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, stirring tensions over federal immigration enforcement, the New York Post reports.

The investigation, still in its early stages according to a source speaking to CBS News, targets whether Walz and Frey, both Democrats, conspired to hinder federal immigration agents.

This follows their public criticism of the deployment of nearly 3,000 federal law enforcement officers to the Minneapolis area in recent weeks. The Justice Department has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has suggested that actions by state and local officials, including statements perceived as threats against officers, could border on federal crimes. Attorney General Pam Bondi also issued a pointed reminder to Minnesota officials that no one stands above legal accountability.

Both Walz and Frey have pushed back, framing the investigation as an overreach of federal power.
