Lake Worth City Commissioners are set to ignore the will of city voters

Comment Up

Four commissioners want their way and the hell with the voters in Lake Worth.  They will create a hotel district allowing 65 feet and will do that from the dais this Tuesday night.

Further, the commission majority insists the hotel district can only succeed if the city allows building heights in the eastside area to exceed the height limits enshrined in the city charter. (No one has ever provided a study to back up that claim either.)

Unfortunately for the commission majority, Lake Worth held a referendum last spring in which city voters, by 56% to 44%, said no to high-rise. (No one has shown that the election was anything other than free, fair and democratic.)

Reason and compromise. Two words that never cross your lips.

I spoke with many who signed the petition and voted for limiting heights to keep another Lucerne from being built "right next to their house" but were in favor of the nose bleeding heights that already exist East of Federal.

If allowing the hotel district were on the ballot as it is now written, that 4 point margin would probably be turned around.

This time, there would be no chance for distortions on either side. The LDR's will now protect the rest of the city, something your charter amendment didn't do.

So who cares what the piss-ant from Ft. Lauderdale says about what we do in Lake Worth? Go head and sue.... to accomplish what? Keeping the Gulfstream from ever being viable? People are already looking at it for use as a rehab facility. If that happens, you can all congratulate yourselves on a job well done.

And as far as who head is where.... pot meet the kettle.

Your sarcasm does NOT impress me.
Neither does the percentage of win that you low-balled. 55.86 vs. 44.14 is NOT 4 points unless, of course, you are debating with Saul Alinsky.

Something you people do--break rules, break election laws, tell half-truths, twist data to suit your twisted and self-serving agenda.

Those helping with the charter amendment did not want to do anything but in the Area that the P&Z and commission changed from 45 to 65 feet in the Comp Plan. That is what affected us and motivated us to action regarding a petition only in our downtown. That is the prime property that developers want.

So scr4eam and shout and come up with all sorts of ridiculous reasons and why our vote should not count. Do you live in North Korea or something?

I live in Lake Worth and it's the same people yelping about something else this time so I'm glad your votes don't count.
They shouldn't.

Is this the Queen herself? Instead of Big Foot in Lake Worth we have Big Mouth? Or is this

Anony at 3:45. I believe the PAC had 1,790 signatures of people who said that they did not want heights over 45 feet. 1,719 of them were certified. So, perhaps you talked to your core group or developers who of course would go to 100 feet if allowed. The people spoke.

Our vote shouldn't count? What sort of fool are you? I don't want Triolo's vote to count either. I don't want Maxwell sliding in there with no opponent or Szerdi either for that matter. They don't represent me. What about Andy? Still hobnobbing with a convicted criminal. I don't want them to count BUT THEY DO.

Folks we are only talking about one type of building that will be allowed to as high as 65 feet and that is a hotel. No other building can go to that height and it can only be buit east of Federal between 2nd Ave North and 1st Ave South. There are only a few lots that would even accommodate that type of building. So do you really think that the folks who voted "no", understood that when everyone was going around saying we needed to keep the entire city low rise. Let's get real, there are no high rises going up all over this city.

do you notice how Wes copies a lot of what you write about?

@5:54--Yeah, we get it--you guys are the ONLY people who can think it through. :)

What the hell? Is this still America? A legal vote of the citizens "SHOULD NOT COUNT"?!? When someone we didn't vote for gets elected, should that vote count? When our law makers pass laws that we don't like, should those laws count? The person who posted that is the real anarchist here in Lake Worth. Elected officials that think it 's O.K. to ignore an election need to be kicked out of office. Katie Mcgiveron

For gods sake Katie if you want them kicked out of office spearhead a recall. You complain so much that people no longer listen.

Anonymous said...

4:38 could you explain your comments. must be some inside thing?

Anonymous said...

You Are wrong 9:33! It is ONLY the NO people who are bullies and want their own way and don't want to listen. I would bet you fit into that category. Always pulling BS and demanding your own way for your own special interests--MONEY into your pocket. People can't get much lower than you.

Anonymous said...

Great idea. Let's get a recall.

"MONEY into your pocket" What are you talking about. Try to be specific. Your rambling is hard to understand. "Pulling BS" ABOUT WHAT. You are probably old and addled and do not mind the decay as long as your decrepit house stays upright.

anonymous at 10:11--I almost deleted your post because it was really dumb lined with personal attacks to make a point. As the attacks were against an anonymous poster, I let it ride...probably won't in the future. However, please remember that age does not make you incompetent or live in a decrepit house. Ronald Reagan became president at age 69.

Lynn, post or delete what you like, but do not say the election was free. It cost over 20 grand and the results were voided by the state.

Lynn Anderson said...

Where did I say the Election was 'FREE?" I have complained about that for over a year and the corruption of this elected body.

In fact, anonymous, part of your second sentence is totally FALSE unless, of course, you believe this commission and the city attorney who works for them. I don't.

Anonymous said...

Lynn, read the last paragraph of your post "free, fair and democratic." Why would you call the city attorney untruthful? An opinion either way would not affect his position. So, really he has no skin in the game. I have not seen a different legal opinion.

Lynn Anderson said...

Again, you misinterpreted the meaning of the word "free" that was used here. FREE, like in a free democratic society!! I did not say that the city attorney was "untruthful." What I said was--I DISAGEE with his opinion in this matter. How much more do I have to spell it out? The skin he has in the game is his JOB. I mean, really, he works for the commission not the electors who decided this election whose results this commission wants to declare moot. Do you honestly believe he will come up with another opinion? Did he even read HB 357? If so, where does it make our election whose results were HELD UP BY THE CITY (an illegal act) FOR 3.5 MONTHS, null on a Charter amendment?

Isn't the Fire Ant written by Steve Ellman, a member of the Respectful Planning PAC?

Nice unbiased article to refer to!

It's a point of view, anonymous and I know it's different from yours. If you don't like that one, then read the Post.

Next, I don't know who the Fire Ant is.
Next, I don't think he is a member of the PAC but then I am not sure who was in the PAC--Laurel, Carolyn and Bob Eliot are the only ones I can name.

For your information, this is an advocacy site. Thought everyone knew that.

Making US irrelevant is not a SMART move! They open themselves up to being irrelevant too! D#4 Commish heard it if he was listening May 17th, TCRPC Seven/50 presentation; Andres Duany said,

Subsidiarity: “We design who makes what decision and when”.

“The Principle is: the smallest party that can competently make it, let’s decide as little as possible now and download to others later…because they’ll be more competent to do it”.

“We don’t need to have more Public Meetings like this. We should just finish the thing and you should pass it…you should just Trust Us and Pass It”.

“Fascism; you can say what you
like but it’s efficient”.

All this from a group that records their meetings on CASSETTE TAPES! Can you even get a cassette player anymore? eBay maybe but in Sears, JCPenny or Target?

Steve Ellman, a freelance writer, isn't getting paid a nickel for this. But the Lake Worth resident says he feels like he's got to do something.

Steve Ellman: We're gathering signatures for a petition to put a referendum on the ballot in the fall.

Ellman is a volunteer for a group called Respectful Planning Lake Worth. The group wants to get 1,500 signatures to clear the way for a ballot issue in November, so that voters can decide if they want to put a height limit on buildings.

Steve Ellman: I think Lake Worth has a special character and a special flavor and I think that would best be preserved by limiting the vertical development in the downtown corridor.

You said he WAS A MEMBER of the Respectful Planning PAC. Now you say a volunteer. Which is it?

"Lynn, post or delete what you like, but do not say the election was free. It cost over 20 grand and the results were voided by the state."

The state did not void this. Our Commissioners took it upon themselves to void this election. Totally amazing, seeing as how these CROOKS depend ON AN ELECTION to become Commissioners in the first place!!!

OK--I am NOT going to answer the "free" descriptive again.I have already answered it. You are taking it out of the context of which it was meant. See my comment at 11:50 yesterday.

Yes, we know these people subverted the will of the people and would not place it on the ballot last November. They put us through hoops and they are STILL DOING THAT.
