Bulldozing "right" - The Palm Beach Post Editorial Board

The Palm Beach Posts' Editorial Board is once again showing its ignorance and its arrogance on what is right and what is wrong. Lake Worth at sea, as usual

Tonight, Lake Worth Media will have a live radio show at 7:30 directly preceding the airing of the Dolphin Dealer, to respond to the Post Editorial Board's follow-up editorial and its insanity.

Not only does this editorial board make light of the recent revelations regarding the Dolphin trafficking and a candidate's involvement in that reprehensible practice, but it proceeds to tell us that it means nothing, that it is ONLY the tangible issues we deal with on a daily basis that are important, not capturing wild animals in the sea and selling them for profit. The Post implies that Moral fiber has nothing to do with qualifications to become an elected official in Lake Worth. We disagree but let's look to some of the issues--

1. Varela has no sense of understanding of Lake Worth's history and what got us to where we are today and says that he does not want to be bothered with "past arguments and past fights." Because of this, he has aligned himself with the same people of the past that were responsible for Lake Worth and why we are in this mess. Varela has been here for 2.5 years but rarely attends commission meetings and is not up on the facts.

2. Wants to rebuild our Utility from the ground up. He has no idea what he is talking about here. Why does he give such an outrageous suggestion? Because he says our utility bills are too high. That is the same reason behind all of the outsourcing in our City. Instead of fixing the problems, it is just easier to start over or give it away. This is not a solution. The fact of the matter is, Lake Worth utility has a reliable service and is one of the cheapest power sources in the state ranking 11 out of 33. With proper management, we will actually make a profit.

3. Varela says that the Casino will cost anywhere from $10 to 15 million to restore so let's not do it. He says that we can't afford it. We have a written guarantee from the top company in the United States that will restore our 35,000 square foot Casino for $7 million regardless of what he finds during the process...no overruns. The City is doing a financial feasibility study so that we can go out on a Revenue Bond and it won't cost the taxpayers anything. He brags about bringing the Michael Singer plan forward that eradicates 2/3rd's of our upper beach front access. He takes credit for saving the $5 million bond money from the County. He complains about John G's only taking cash with no understanding of the simple fact that restaurant profit is low, that John G's keeps its prices very affordable and paying a commission back to a credit card company would force him to raise his prices.

4. Says that he is disappointed in Commissioner Mulvehill for her lack of independence. Once again, he has no idea of what he speaks. In fact, one of the most important issues before the commission this year was to take back the CRA. Mulvehill voted to allow it to remain an independent Board thus going against the usual majority. Mulvehill does a lot of research on every issue. This is sour grapes because she beat him last year. Recently Varela stated that he was against the commission's wanting to preserve public land of the pocket parks adjacent to our waterfront. It seems the owners wanted to grab that property as their own. Protecting this public land passed on a 5 to 0 vote by the commission.

The very fact that the Post even wrote a post editorial regarding its endorsement of Varela was due to the over-whelming response from the public. It shows its embarrassment and the need to re-establish its position as the authority. They want to bulldoze "right" even when they know that they are wrong.

We will be talking about this tonight at 7:30.
