Yesterday, several people spoke to the Palm Beach County Commission regarding its desire to allow the Braves taking acreage on public land at John Prince Park. Following are comments from one resident followed by the facts:
Thank you commissioners for giving me the opportunity to briefly speak to you about our concerns over the possible takeover of our public park by corporate baseball. Actually, I’m here to speak in support of the Braves Corporation. I’m in support of this billion dollar, heavily tax-subsidized company setting up their training camp anywhere outside of our park that we have lived with for over fifty years. (Provided that they use their own money and NO taxpayer dollars regardless of the source.)
I just want to address one particular concern about some misleading information that has been published in the news media about the amount of public land the company wants to take from our park. The local minions of the Braves Corporation seem to want to minimize the impact of this takeover by making repeated statements to the media that this is a 726 acres site and they only want to take TINY 100-110 acres of it for their private use.
We have attempted to examine the actual impact on the usable lands using published park administration figures (where they are available) and through measurements of actual park areas using satellite imaging methods. We have prepared a handout of these figures that we have provided for your use and for the use of the news media who we hope will move to correct these statements.
As you can see, 338 acres of the park area happens to be water. Perhaps we could add a new dimension to baseball by providing the players with water wings, but I seriously doubt if that would happen. In all probability only the bats would float.
This leaves us with 338 acres of total land, much of which is occupied by the Golf Center, the campground, the Maintenance Area (which turned out to be an additional and crucial public asset in recovering from a number of recent hurricanes) and the Administration Complex.
This leaves the maximum land area available for free (or almost free) public use of 238 acres. In reality, the Corporation wants to take away almost ½ of that.
You can visualize this on the attached map if you mentally superimpose the 100 acre scale drawing over the land area actually available for public use.

Great research and presentation by Mr. Martin! Both he and his wife made excellent points and I really wish we had people like this behind the dais to represent our interests. I doubt if the Braves will play ball underwater, or open up their negotiations to the sunshine. What is obvious is that this currently proposed public give away to special interests will definitely "creatively" put our county budget underwater to the tune of $110-230 million. On top of the other stadium they are building. And they have the nerve to ask me for a 17% tax increase?? I have to wonder who gets the one million dollar finders fee from the Braves... I noticed that Val Haleche certainly seemed incensed that the news he gave $500 to Scott Maxwell was disclosed. We have to do better come November elections. To destroy an 80 year old well used and well functioning naturally beautiful ecosystem for a scientifically proven return of just 11 cents on the dollar invested certainly, to me, proves a demonstrated lack of fiduciary responsibility with our money.
A great response tot he County Commission. His research is right down to the point. Why weould we want a baseball park in the middle of our wildlife park.I love baseball, but it needs to be to the west out by the turnpike, where there is more land available. What are our County Commissioners thinking? Vote them out in the next election for messing with our Wildlife areas. This is a park designated by the person that
donated this land not for sports events. Our parks are for peaceful
walking areas, peaceful picnics, boating, and other peaceful events.
Until we kick these growth whore liars out of office, our County will only get more trashed. These crooks get NO MORE OF MY MONEY !!! NO 1 cent tax increase !Vana lied her ass off about John Prince Park, just like Piggy Fisher did in front of the Lake Worth commission .
Vana even had the nerve to complain about the cost of GARBAGE PICKUP in the park ! WTF? Thank GOD Vana is term limited.
Awesome!
I just read Wes Blackman's Blog. Once again it is full of lies and accusations. We did not stage the protest regarding the garbage pick up in the park just because we protested the incumbent. It was in regards to a letter received from the city. They sent the letter and gave erroneous data to the press with regards to the cost of pick up. They left out half of the park, and have yet to print that it was an error due to their poor record keeping. He is such and idiot. As for the John Prince Park vs Atlanta Braves deal. There are over 275 people who signed a petition to protest the building of the stadium. Guess he doesn't want to acknowledge that one either. By the way don't even bother reading his blog because it you and a disagreeing comment it will NEVER BE PRINTED.
Thanks Lynn for being honest and forthcoming. You never (unless it is REALLY NASTY AND FOUL) refuse negative comments. You are open for discussion.
Believe it or not, there are still many people not aware they are trying to take John Prince Park for the Braves. When I tell them they are shocked.
