Remembering Jackie

Comment Up

With all the talk about Spring training games I reflected on my childhood and that experience. When I was a kid here in the 1950's, the coolest thing was to go to Spring training games. I lived in West Palm Beach early on before our family moved to Lake Worth and walked to the games at Connie Mack Field after school as they were held in West Palm Beach’s Wright Field right near the Central Schools and Central Elementary School where I attended. They were free to kids.

All the major teams came to Connie Mack field and it was home to the Philadelphia Athletics that were here for some years, later moving their spring training to Bradenton, Florida. Connie Mack Field is now the parking garage at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

I used to hang out near the locker rooms to get autographs before the games started.  One day I waited and waited for a special person...he was late exiting the locker room.  Being a kid, I had no idea all that he had gone through or what he had endured. All I knew was that he was the greatest and I was nuts about the Brooklyn Dodgers. All the other players were on the field.  He finally exited and I timidly looked up at him and asked him if I could have his autograph.  He was the biggest giant of a man to me.  Was I ever thrilled when I got Jackie Robinson's autograph.  I kept it for years even after I was married. It was a treasure among all autographs. It later got lost in the shuffle of life, my one regret.

that's another problem. national teams have a way of blackmailing cities to improve this and that and then threaten to move.

This story is so chock full of lies even for you it's amazing. All your childhood "memories" are nothing more than information from Wikipedia and local news reports. A record crowd turned out for that game just to see Robinson play. Do you expect anyone to believe that out of the thousands of people there to specifically see Robinson YOU caught him when he was alone?
Do you expect anyone to believe a 3 or 4 year old girl was wandering around a crowd of 6 thousand alone?
Considering the life you've lived your one regret was losing an autograph you never really had?
There's lots more holes to shoot into your "memories" but why bother?

I went ahead and posted your hateful comment, anonymous.

You know, it's really sad when someone can't write anything without your personal attacks. You really do need special care. Check yourself in immediately to the nearest facility. Maybe they can help you get over your personality disorder.

Your entire comment is full of fantasy. You like rewriting my blog? You have no ability to write a post-it-note.

Well let's see LS or MP? Both pretty miserable. Can't forget WB.

Spring training games back in those days were lightly attended, perhaps a few hundred people. They were a lot of fun. I remember Herb Score, hometown hero and Lake Worth graduate. He was some sort of hero to all of us.

Anonymous at 11:31. You have a lot of hate in your heart. What motivates you so? I see the veins in your head popping out. This is serious. Let us know when you check into the looney bin, ok? Do you pack?
