A Brief Chat and some thoughts on our Mayor, Rachel Waterman

Comment Up

On Tuesday, Katie and I dropped in to see the Mayor during her new twice a week open door policy. We had concerns about some contractors wanting to sell us on the idea of $3 million more at our beach redevelopment project. She was already meeting with a group in an earlier 15 incremental slot. We got in to chat for a few minutes; there was another gentleman waiting regarding the advertising newsracks in Lake Worth. After that she was heading for a news conference.

Featuring the Mayor today was triggered by a commenter who put her down on my blog from something she said at a recent commission meeting. People are quick to judge and find fault even with the smallest of things. She showed a lot of class Tuesday night by answering the complaint about Kilwin's being expensive. Telling the truth is a "no no" to some. Kilwin's is shockingly expensive for my personal finances so I can imagine what it is for a family of four.

Mayor Waterman is smart and a quick learner. She seems to know the history on a lot that has happened within the city. With a mind of her own and always thinking, she will be no one's rubber stamp. I expect her to be one of the most prepared on the dais.

I like especially how she is running her meetings. There will be a learning curve here as Roberts Rules are somewhat difficult to digest. All those who speak at the lectern are supposed to give their name and address prior to commenting. We all should know who is speaking and if they live in the city when they get up there to influence our commission. This rule has never been implemented and I am glad to see that the mayor finds it important as well.

With Budget meetings coming up and a final millage plus fire/rescue services, I have no doubt that she will do her homework as she has done since she was sworn in.

I have to agree with you Lynn - The Mayor is smart and quick on her feet. I think this City is going to benefit and be pleasantly surprised by her skills. I especially like that she speaks her mind and the truth – this is no shrinking violet! ArĂȘte

Possible scenario: waterman is easily voting with Maxwell on items as the 3 to 2 vote is always there, no matter what she does.
This is a very smart move politically and one that paves the to be re-elected in Nov., by playing middle of the road.
Bravo.
But, I still have to ask, ...as she was documented saying she would enthusiastically support Cara Jennings for mayor, and Cara has distinctly different values and ideaology than Maxwell,...how does that make any sense..?
Not trying to be negative, -just stating the obvious I think.

I believe that I have stated before that she has her own mind and is not controlled by anyone. She is not up there to be political but to vote making the best decisions possible with all of the facts. If this means agreeing with Scott Maxwell, great. She is not up there to be a bully either. Also as stated on many occasions, Cara Jennings made a lot of good decisions for Lake Worth...several bad. She also was quick on her feet and very smart. I see a lot of Cara in Waterman in those regards. I wouldn't put a whole lot of value on something Waterman said on Cara's Facebook page. Instead, let's look at how she handles herself, handles the meetings and her thought process that goes into every decision she makes. Scott Maxwell makes excellent points on many issues. He did so the other night on Johnny Longboats and Snitkin. He just didn't stick to his guns. The real estate broker sold him a bunch of crap. Waterman and he should have insisted that this broker come back with more choices and not worry about Vanilla boxes or whatever.

And speaking of not believing restaurant reviews on another blog here, every single commissioner should have visited Johnny Longboats prior to that meeting and got first-hand information regarding the restaurant overall--that includes Staff that pushed it. Not to do this was not in the best interest of LW.

Kilwin's is expensive, we don't go there that often both because of price and because we try not to eat sweets. But there is no harm in having a variety of establishments that cater to different kinds of consumers/families.

I agree, if we are considering Johnny Longboats (who I like to call Longboards for some reason) staff and elected officials should have checked it out. My husband and I have been to the one in Riveria beach and we both commented that it would be perfect for our Casion (just our opinion).
