Senate Confirms Trump Pick for CDC Director

Dr. Erica Schwartz will become the top official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Senate on Aug. 5 confirmed President Donald Trump’s latest nominee for director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC, a public health agency that aims to protect Americans from diseases, has about 12,000 employees.

Fifty-one senators voted to confirm Dr. Erica Schwartz to the position, compared to 43 who voted no.

All the yes votes came from Republicans apart from Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.). All the no votes came from Democrats or Independents who caucus with Democrats. Six senators, including Sens. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), missed the vote.

Schwartz will become the second person Trump has nominated to serve as director of the CDC.

West Palm Beach Corporation wins $90 million Air Force Contract

Powerus subsidiary wins Air Force contract worth up to $90M

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Autonomous Power Corporation, operating as Powerus (NASDAQ:PUSA), announced Monday that its subsidiary Tandem Defense LLC received a contract from the U.S. Air Force for Group 1 aerial-denial unmanned aircraft systems.

The competitively awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract has a ceiling value of $90 million and extends through mid-2028, according to a press release statement. The contract includes ancillary support equipment, operator training, and field service representative support.

The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio manages the contract. Under the IDIQ structure, the Air Force may place individual orders against the ceiling as requirements arise, with work locations to be determined by follow-on task orders.

Powerus stated that actual revenue will depend on individual task orders placed by the Air Force and may be materially less than the $90 million ceiling. The contract remains subject to government funding availability, task-order issuance, and the government’s right to terminate for convenience. The Air Force has obligated initial funding as of the announcement date.

Tandem Defense manufactures unmanned aircraft systems for military, government, and law enforcement customers in the United States.

Powerus (Nasdaq: PUSA), is a defense technology company headquartered at 515 North Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach, Florida. The company builds unified autonomous drone and counter-UAS systems for military and commercial operations.

But do the Democrats want him?

The New York Post reported that top Pennsylvania Democratic insiders have already begun maneuvering to mount a primary campaign against Fetterman in 2028, with former Rep. Conor Lamb seen as the likely challenger.

A Quinnipiac University poll showed a majority of Democratic voters disapprove of Fetterman's job performance, even though he remains broadly popular when Republican voters are included in the sample.

Fetterman himself has acknowledged the friction with his base. "Parts of my base are really angry with me, which is really strange," he said in an earlier interview. "I mean, run the numbers. I mean, I vote, I think 90%-plus Democrat... but my base, [they're] very angry about me being fully, fully, unapologetically supportive of Israel."

He has previously questioned whether Democrats have room for pro-Israel voices like his own, a question the party's activist wing has answered with growing hostility.

So the picture is this: a senator who votes with his party on the vast majority of legislation, but who has become a pariah within his own base over a handful of issues, chiefly Israel, and who responds to that rejection not by moderating but by escalating.

Calling elements of your own coalition supporters of "full-on communism" is not the language of a man trying to mend fences.

Gottheimer draws a line: Democratic Socialists aren't Democrats and aren't welcome

Rep. Josh Gottheimer is telling his own party that the Democratic Socialists of America are trying to hijack the Democratic brand, and he wants them shown the door.

The New Jersey Democrat, a leader of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, went on Fox News Sunday to deliver a blunt message: DSA members are not Democrats, their values clash with the party's, and they should start their own organization instead of borrowing the Democratic label to push what he called a communist, anti-American, open-borders agenda.

His remarks landed the same weekend the DSA held its Socialists Summit in Chicago, where convention footage captured members voicing support for the Communist Manifesto, Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky, and campus organizing aimed at driving Immigration and Customs Enforcement off university grounds. The post drew nearly 10 million views and was shared 15,000 times, a measure of how far frustration with the war has spread inside the president's own base.

The gathering amounts to the most visible step yet by dissident figures on the populist right to channel that frustration into something organized. Greene, Massie, Carlson, and Kent have each paid a political or professional price for breaking with the White House. Now they say they want to build an alternative.

Stephanie Grisham seeks restraining order against Rep. Max Miller as abuse allegations mount

Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham has filed a restraining order against Rep. Max Miller, adding another legal front to a sprawling domestic abuse saga that now threatens the Ohio Republican's political future.

Grisham, who briefly dated Miller during the first Trump administration, filed the order in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, accusing the congressman of breaching a 2023 settlement agreement that included a nondisclosure provision barring disparaging public comments.

The filing follows Miller's decision to post on X on May 7, publicly claiming Grisham had fabricated her abuse allegations against him, a move her attorneys say destroyed the "contractual benefit of peace and finality" the settlement was designed to protect.

The restraining order is the latest in a widening circle of legal and personal crises surrounding Miller. His ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), has separately alleged in court filings and police reports that Miller shoved her, dumped scalding water on her that left burn marks, and held a gun to her head. She is now seeking full custody of their two-year-old daughter.

Grisham first raised abuse claims in her 2021 memoir, "I'll Take Your Questions Now," writing that an ex-boyfriend, later identified as Miller, had physically abused her during their relationship. Politico reported at the time that Miller pushed Grisham against a wall and slapped her.

Miller denied the allegations and filed a defamation lawsuit against her in Cuyahoga County, claiming she acted with "actual malice" to harm him, retaliate against the Trump administration, and boost book sales. A judge denied Miller's request for an immediate restraining order in that case.

Emily Moreno, Senator Bernie Moreno's daughter, is now the second woman to accuse Miller of domestic violence, and she has sought her own restraining order against him. Miller was married to Moreno’s daughter, Emily Moreno, from 2022 until their divorce was finalized in 2025.

President Trump is pushing his lawsuit against Hillary Clinton all the way to the Supreme Court

He is seeking to overturn an appellate ruling that rejected his claims and hit him with nearly $1 million in sanctions.

Justice Clarence Thomas granted Trump’s request for more time to file a formal petition with the high court, extending the deadline to September 9. Thomas handles routine administrative motions from the relevant circuit, and the extension itself does not signal how any justice might vote on the merits. But the move keeps alive a legal fight that Trump’s own attorneys say raises “exceptionally important” issues with consequences for the presidency itself.

The case, Trump v. Clinton, centers on Trump’s allegation that Clinton and others conspired to “weave a false narrative” that his 2016 campaign colluded with Russia. A lower court tossed the suit. A conservative appeals court upheld that dismissal and went further, imposing sanctions of nearly $1 million against Trump, his attorney Alina Habba, and Habba’s law firm. Senate Resolution: Ghislane Maxwell will not get a pardon

Senate votes unanimously to oppose any pardon for convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell

Every senator on the floor backed a resolution opposing clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell, a rare bipartisan rebuke aimed squarely at the possibility that the convicted sex trafficker could walk free.

Bipartisan agreement in the Senate is rare enough to be newsworthy on its own. Cross-party votes on resolutions tend to happen only when the alternative, being seen as the lone holdout, carries more risk than the vote itself.

On the question of pardoning a woman who helped traffic children, that calculation was apparently simple enough for every senator in the chamber.
