State Department gets new Secretary for Management

Trump-appointed State Department official departs interim role after brief tenure

Tibor Nagy, who served a brief stint as interim Under Secretary for Management at the U.S. Department of State, is stepping down after a tenure of less than three months.

Nagy's departure takes place against the backdrop of significant changes at the agency, reflecting a changing agenda under the leadership of President Donald Trump and a larger governmental restructuring spearheaded by Elon Musk, as U.S. News and World Report explains.

The appointment of Nagy earlier this year aimed to align the State Department with the priorities of Trump's second administration. Assuming the interim role on Jan. 20, Nagy's tenure was marked by significant challenges, including overseeing staffing cuts and the closure of the U.S. foreign aid agency, USAID. His departure signals a continuation of the ongoing restructuring of the department.

Nagy emerged from retirement to help navigate these turbulent waters at the State Department. According to a spokesperson from the State Department, it was Nagy’s original intention to fulfill the duties of his position temporarily, pending the confirmation of new department leaders. Despite his short tenure, Nagy emphasized the necessity for transformation within the State Department to meet the evolving demands of the 21st century.

With Nagy stepping down, José Cunningham, who has been serving as the assistant secretary of administration, will now assume the top position. Cunningham's succession signals continuity in implementing the department's strategic realignment goals as conceived under Trump’s administration.
