Lost in Transition: transgender teens discuss thoughts and feelings

"LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — From bathroom bills, to rules about youth sports, to policies about medical transitions: issues impacting transgender youth have become a national obsession.

In Florida, lawmakers have been debating these policies and more. Doctors, parents, and politicians on both sides have been furiously debating -- and children are listening to what they say."

One voice that hasn't been heard enough during these conversations are the youth themselves. The medium age that brains develop is age 25."

A diagnosis for gender dysphoria is included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), a manual published by the American Psychiatric Association. Bulimia and anorexia are passé and have been replaced by gender dysphoria.

Children under 18 — who are not legally able to get a tattoo, smoke, or drink — are not old enough to think through the consequences of potentially life-altering decisions.
