Clemens/Bernard Re-Count

Comment Up

At the moment, the Supervisor of Elections office is counting the provisional ballots. They should have an answer tomorrow. I was told that it would not be up on their web site tonight as they close at 5pm.

The problem:  There was a change in the voting law.
Voters who move from one county to another must file a provisional ballot if they haven't already changed their address with the supervisor's office. Previously, Florida voters could change their address at the polls and fill out a regular ballot. This is one of the situations that we encountered when we were petitioning--voters had moved and not yet changed their address with the SOE.

Bucher said that Palm Beach County officials have to check with 11 other counties to make sure that the provisional voters did not vote in two places.

"Under state law, a margin less than a quarter percentage point requires a so-called "hand" recount. The 35 votes is less than a quarter percent. Provisional’s cast for example are when voters show up at the wrong polling location and all provisional’s have to be approved by the canvassing board. Both Mack and Bernard tell CBS12 reporter Chuck Weber they agree with the process and look forward to the final results. If a hand recount is required it would take place either Friday or Saturday."
