Shuffleboard Court Building getting a Facelift
Only a few Socialists wanted it and the vast majority spoke out against it, but we got it anyway--an illegal alien hiring hall at our Shuffleboard Court Building. Former Mayor Jeff Clemens was the swing vote who voted for it.
Finally, on October 5, 2010 the Lake Worth City Commission voted to shut down the Hiring Hall and not renew the lease with The Mentoring Center. They were out by year end.
According to FLIMEN, the reason was that Lake Worth was nearing bankruptcy and needed the facilities for legitimate services. FLIMEN Vice President, David Caulkett, attended the final hearing and stated: "The Lake Worth Illegal Alien Hiring Hall is closing because of near bankruptcy, not because of principles. Perhaps if elected officials in Lake Worth and throughout the USA diligently applied principles, we might have a fiscally healthy nation, instead of waiting up to the moment of bankruptcy."
Repairs continue at our Shuffleboard Court Building that was totally trashed by the former tenant and by those it attracted. The work has been slow. Staff suggested the removal of our courts and we are yet to have this issue discussed or resolved. All has been quiet. Why? I know plenty of shuffleboard players who want the courts to remain and are waiting for the issue to be put on the agenda. By the time that happens, all of our owners who play will be gone for the Summer Season.

Last week, House and Senate Committees in Tallahassee approved legislation – SB 7082 and HB 7217 – that allows the four investor owned utility companies unlimited ability to build renewable energy plants and charge their customers for the costs of construction and operation. This equates to a $358 million a year increase in utility rates for Floridians at a time when the Florida Public Service Commission has stated that we don’t have a need for any new electricity generation for at least ten years.

The proposed bills remove any required need for the new energy however, meaning that there doesn’t have to be any review or determination that the renewable energy plant is necessary before the customer gets footed with the bill. The utility companies are painting this bill as something to encourage renewable energy in the state. But the reality is that this will hurt individual renewable investments in the state and give complete market control to the large companies.
Florida’s industrial utility rates are already 52 percent higher and residential rates are 20 percent higher that the average of surrounding states. Raising rates higher will only further prevent our economic recovery and growth.

The House Energy & Utilities Subcommittee passed this bill out unanimously with 10 Republican and 5 Democrats voting for the bill.
The Senate Committee on Communications, Energy and Public Utilities also passed the bill with 8 Republicans and 5 Democrats voting for it and Senator Mike Fasano (R) casting the lone vote against it.

Now Folks, as one of our commissioners would say, "Folks, don't you think these documents are telling a story?" Shouldn't we perhaps investigate the motivations of the owners who went on a pit bull attack against our officials? There are more liens but I do believe this shows that there are problems here. Rallying support to increase your business is okay but not they way this came down. The motto these days is, "Let's blame everyone else for the messes we make."

Cara Jennings Challenges Policy
Cara, have you forgotten Comment Policy?Peter Timm, Katie McGiveron and myself have spoken on our right to be able to speak on Consent Agenda Items. We believe that all residents should have the right to speak on anything. It's our money they are screwing around with.
It used to be under Mayor Jeff Clemens, that once an item was pulled from Consent Agenda, anyone in the public could speak to the issue. If it was not pulled, you could not speak on it even during public commentary. That is reserved for non-agendaed items. Mayor Varela changed this policy. Once an item is pulled from Consent, it has to be moved to New Business for the Public to speak on it and a motion made and agreed.
Former Commissioner Cara Jennings challenged the policy on Tuesday night and wanted to speak on the 2nd Avenue North two-way street issue that had been approved on Consent--did the city have a traffic study done? As the item was not pulled and moved, she had no right to speak on it. The Mayor was clearly frustrated. Someone on the Dais asked the City Attorney to give an opinion who said that the Commission could vote on changing the policy. They made a motion for that one item and Jennings got to speak.
Cara Jennings forgot what the policy was. If they had changed it to allow anyone to speak on Consent Agenda items when we suggested it while she was on the Dais, this would have been a non-issue on Tuesday night.

Have not seen Moscovies on Lake Osborne in John Prince Park in a long time. They were being netted by "undocumented" people many of whom have fled the area. Perhaps now they have a chance at survival.

Last night during Public Comment on non-agenda items, I pointed out to the Commission that the deadline to apply for CDBG funds is less than 2 weeks away. As you already know, the CDBG program is one that I have followed closely and spoken out on many, many times.
Perhaps I am being paranoid, but I find it difficult to believe that the City had *no* idea that the deadline is right around the corner. Is it possible that an application has been or will be submitted without the required public input meetings? Would it be that the City is looking for even MORE money for it's ill-conceived and unpopular "Housing Initiative?"
Keep in mind that in addition to the potential loss of this years funds, the City is still sitting on the $350,000 it set aside for the "Housing Initiative." Although they have advertised for a Housing Manager (@ $80k/year!), the position has not been filled and NOTHING has been done to even implement the program.
In the past, the City has lost CDBG funds because they were unable to get moving on the programs the money was designated for. The $350k has already been "reprogrammed" once because the City didn't act on their original plans. How long until the County decides that there are other Cities and dozens of other non-profits that can use $350k immediately? How long until the Commission pays attention to their Finance Advisory Board that has TWICE recommend that the City suspend the program and use the money for parks, sidewalks, streets and traffic calming?

A leader of the Gay community, Tony Plakas says, "They (LW residents) are done waiting for Stanton to play nice, and they are more than willing to make sure everyone sees how often she plays nasty, even if her leadership style is what makes her so unpopular."

Maddox went on and on about how they had bargained in good faith and had "given up a lot." When asked by Mayor Varela, Maddox had no idea of what the Union had "given up" in this new Contract. He couldn't come up with one dollar amount. He just knew that the Union had done everything in good faith to work with the City. The City, getting accustomed to being bullied, gave into the Union by giving it another opportunity to prove its case by coming up with the numbers showing the exact dollars it has conceded. The City will meet in executive Session on April 12 in order to discuss and to make a determination, once again. This Contract is still unfavorable to the City.
We continue to give into the bullies in this city giving them every chance to make their case. Stanton is the only one with guts and stamina.

Clearly a Demonstrator who was fooled
The message to The Cottage rang loud and clear--cut the noise and play within the rules--you are nothing more than a cyber-bully.
It was a vicious game and a dance around the real issue -- Lake Worth's Noise Ordinance. The dance was choreographed by The Cottage itself--cyber bullying, demonstrations, the Media and using the vulnerability of the gay community to get its way--loud music late at night.
Even Susan Stanton was accused of using the expression "men dressing like women" when allegedly referring to the Tea dances held once a month/week? at The Cottage. That was a "no no" in their eyes--proof of homophobia. It was a "he said, she said" and an expression captured from her CNN special. Even if she did say it, so what? Does this mean she is anti-Gay? It has nothing to do with the despicable charges from The Cottage of abuse, harassment, discrimination, homophobia or any of the other excuses they had in order to have loud, outside music in the early morning hours and not to be bothered by all these pesky neighbors who complain.
Everyone could see through the sham other than the normal politicos who chose not to and those who wanted to believe The Cottage's interpretation of homophobic behavior. The Cottage used the Gay community for its end, and that is even more shameful. The Cottage depended upon a sitting Commissioner with his own agenda to promote its allegations by having him ask for a full investigation, a Commissioner who readily and willingly fell into the trap. Bullies attract bullies.
The room was packed and unfortunately we all had to stay very late in order to be heard on this issue. There were some leaders of the Gay community who displayed guarded comments when they spoke and could see through the allegations. There had to have been more than two gay men in the chamber who knew the truth but none had balls. They were all in support of a Gay owner's charge against the entire City of Lake Worth and the one who started the petition on Change.org. That was easier to believe and they all wanted to show solidarity at a big cost to the City. Those who spoke out against the City were predominately from the Gay-Lesbian-Transgender community who readily accepted any ridiculous charge of homophobia, an extremely sensitive issue. Even the owner, Loretta Lufty, gave Scott Maxwell credit in 2007 as being the only commissioner in office who helped her. He was not in office in 2007 but since then he does involve himself in questionable battles.
Because a business does a lot for charity and an owner gets on local Boards such as The Lake Worth Playhouse, does not give that owner any special rights. Be a good neighbor; conduct your business within the rules. Play by the Golden Rule. No exceptions even if you are The Cottage.
Commissioner Maxwell asked for a full investigation directing the city manager to investigate herself. He was voted down on a 3/2 vote. He was reminded that he could use the Freedom of Information Act to obtain any documents he wished. This was clearly put on the Agenda for a witch hunt.
This is a sad day in Lake Worth when cyber liars can denigrate an entire city that supports Gay rights. I still believe that the City should pursue legal recourse.

Lake Worth Kiwanis Club is making plans for the annual Earth Day Peace Jam. For over 40 years Earth Day has inspired individuals and organizations worldwide to demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
This year the Lake Worth Kiwanis Club and the City of Lake Worth will host a free event for the community called Earth Day Peace Jam on April 9th at the Lake Worth Cultural Plaza from 12pm-9pm. This year’s Earth Day Peace Jam promises to be an outstanding event with a message about the many Acts of Green. The event will feature a clean air caravan, hybrids, electric cars and bicycles will gather in the PNC bank parking lot across Lucerne Avenue from the Cultural Plaza at 3 PM.
At 4 PM, participants will caravan through downtown Lake Worth, green flags flying, with zero or near-zero emissions. Exhibits will range from county wide conservation projects to solar energy and Florida wildlife. The music will also be a big part of the event with local bands from rock to funk and transcendental to new age.

Florida Senate Bill 2040 Passes in Committee on a 4/2 - E-Verify and Illegal Immigration

The Bill: Requires every employer to use the federal program for electronic verification of employment eligibility in order to verify the employment eligibility of each employee hired on or after a specified date. Provides an exception in the case of employees who present specified documents to the employer. Requires the Attorney General to request from the Department of Homeland Security a list of employers who are registered with the E-Verify Program and to post that list to the Attorney General's website, etc.
Church groups were in the act: They always bring up Martin Luther King when they want to sound righteous. Rev. Russell Myers of the Florida Council of Churches invoked the spirit of King and the civil rights movement in speaking out against the Florida immigration bills. Then there was the Florida New Majority, founded in 2009 which is a 501©4 organization that says it was organized to educate, and mobilize communities in Florida to win equity and fairness throughout the state trying to overcome what they say is racism and division in Florida. They love "illegals...no one is illegal."
Florida Senate President, Mike Haridopolos said, “This is a Florida-specific solution to address the issue of illegal immigration in our state. Florida will step up and protect its citizens because the federal government has failed us.”

It's a shame that the Post writes a very slanted article on E-Verify, never giving the opposing view. It is always that poor illegal alien who feels his civil rights are violated, you know, the guy who crossed our border without the legal right to do so. Enough of this.
If a crime is committed and the suspect is described as 6 feet tall, blond and blue eyes, you don't stop black people and question them. If brown people who appear to be from the Mid-East have blown up a public building, you don't go looking for 6 feet tall, blue eyed blonds. Racial profiling is a very large part of good policing.

Because of two bar/restaurants downtown, one of which is no longer here, the City went through hoops and devised a noise ordinance in order to be fair to businesses and to the neighborhood alike after receiving numerous calls of loud music late into the morning hours. The Cottage, in retaliation, joined a petition web site, spouting the most outlandish lies against our city manager, Commissioner Golden and the City in general, garnering petitions across the country accusing them of being anti-Gay.
It is unbelievable to me how any establishment in our city can make the accusations they have made. This is politics at its worse. I have never seen anything so disgusting and when you think about it, their accusations are so utterly laughable and ridiculous to all of us who live here and know better and who know the people accused. How would you like to be a Gay person accused of being anti-gay? How would you like to be a strong advocate all of your life for civil rights and be accused of violating that? How silly is that? How dangerous is the accuser?
Accusing Susan Stanton, Jo-Ann Golden and our City of discriminating against gays you just have to wonder if they think their business is located in Topeka, Kansas or anywhere but Lake Worth, the Gay capital of the east coast of America. Don’t they know that those they accuse are big supporters of the gay community as most all of us are in Lake Worth? A lie can go a long way--over 1,300 signatures from across the country from people who have no clue. Tell the lie and there is a big percentage of people who will believe it.

This establishment seems to be bullying the City in order to get its way. It has definitely started a national campaign to convince people that Lake Worth is violating laws. Their accusations of harassment and discrimination are public and now worldwide and are detrimental to the health and welfare of the City of Lake Worth, Commissioner Golden, Susan Stanton and to the four unnamed residents who anyone can look up and identify in public records.
Because of two bar/restaurants downtown, one of which is no longer here, the City went through hoops and devised a noise ordinance in order to be fair to businesses and to the neighborhood alike after receiving numerous calls of loud music late into the morning hours. - City enabled and fed homophobic behavior
- City did not follow civil rights laws
- A Commissioner made disparaging remarks
- Accuses same Commissioner of being the cause of a Noise Ordinance

Amoroso to run against Golden
Since Andy Amoroso has some new found power, Vice Chair of the CRA and President of his Neighborhood Association as well as the Downtown Cultural Alliance, he plans on running for City Commissioner District 3 against Jo-Ann Golden. A city commissioner must be 100% more fiscally responsible than what has been displayed at the CRA.
