Red states eye Everglades-style migrant centers
With alligators prowling nearby and tents stretching across 30 square miles of swamp, Florida’s controversial new migrant detention site is attracting national attention from Republican leaders.Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and President Donald Trump are urging GOP-led states to adopt their own versions of the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility, with several governors now moving to build their own sites, Fox News reported.
Georgia, under Gov. Brian Kemp, shared plans to convert a facility into what would become the nation’s largest migrant detention facility. Kemp’s spokesman said the state has long led on immigration efforts and is now working with the private sector and ICE to expand that role.
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ office confirmed a new 3,000-bed prison is in development. Sanders has already pushed legislation increasing penalties for undocumented individuals who commit additional crimes in the state.
Other states are following suit. Alaska officials clarified that while they are not planning their own version of the facility, they are aware of the ongoing trend. In a lighthearted remark, representatives told Fox News, “We don't have alligators, but we have lots of bears.”
