Lake Worth Finance Department Takes Top Honors

The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Lake Worth by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and its management.

An Award of Financial Reporting Achievement has been awarded to the Finance Department of the City of Lake Worth.

The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, IL, and Washington, D.C.

Located in central Palm Beach County, Lake Worth is a dynamic, multi-cultural city with an individualistic style. People are drawn to the city by its acceptance of different cultures and lifestyles, historic districts, hip downtown and colorful arts district. ###

The award that the finance department received is the equivalent of getting a prize when opening a box of cracker jacks. Ask the question of what locality was not awarded this "distinguished honor" if they requested it. It sounds good, but the reality is much less.

Sounds like you just want to like the icing off anything positive in the city... Can you find no joy in us getting some accolades from an outside agency/non-profit financial professional group citing our efforts for clear communication from the city to stakeholders.

My guess is you always see the glass half empty.

Look, all you have to do is pay the proper fees. It's great PR but meaningless.

You are right, Lynn- a totally meaningless award given to those who pay for it.

We the people deserve an award for defeating the 30 year bond that the three incumbents wanted to shove down our throats.

Vote for anyone else in March!!!

What about just accepting the truth in this case anony at 11:54. Where did you get the idea this was a not for profit company. We pay for this award.

Hey Anom 1:11... You really must improve your reading comprehension skills... Second paragraph from the end on the letter... "The GFOA is a non profit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance officials..."

You could also google it, or more simly continue to consume the gruel and slop being spoon fed to you

So, if it is an association, do we also pay dues to belong? The fact remains, to get this award, the city submits an application and pays the necessary fees. That's the fact.

There is a membership fee to belong and it does charge for these awards based on what you want included, i.e., total revenues, total expenses, pensions, etc.

So, it may be a "non-profit" but it does charge for this award.

So, I think people can read and comprehend just fine.

And the award application was submitted by Lake Worth's "Economic Development Director".
How about we fire her and use her salary for real economic development.

She has done nothing to improve the upstairs space at the Casino to get it rented, and nothing to improve the ballroom to rent it for higher rates.

She's not the problem here. Isn't it the Recreation Dept in charge of our casino? Not sure anymore as things change. The buck stops with the City Manager. I think that they need to tell us the truth on the amount of money that we ARE making with the ballroom even without that other 5,000 s/f space unfinished. We shouldn't have to hear a citizen, Laurel Decker, tell us that we are in the black when the CM doesn't even know the figure.

Sounds like a little cleanup on isle 9 for pre election preening. I'm sure this makes up for firing the finance director for speaking the truth in numbers and (GASP!) admitting the beach was in the black before Scotty boy changed that. And then had Bornstein fire him for this egregious transgression. Truth in numbers only if it agrees with the almighty gang of 3.
