Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that about 50 nations have reached out to the US to discuss President Trump’s sweeping tariffs, however, he said that nothing will stop the levies from going forward.Defending the president’s economic plan on Sunday, Lutnick said the calls from foreign officials prove that “these countries know that they’ve been ripping us off,” suggesting there was no room for negotiations.
“There is no postponing,” he told CBS’s Face The Nation. “They are definitely going to stay in place for days and weeks.”
“The tariffs are coming,” Lutnick added. “He wasn’t kidding. The tariffs are coming. Of course, they are.”
While Lutnick did not specify which countries contacted, the White House, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett both reiterated the assertion during separate appearances on Sunday shows.
