Highlands School Lake Worth, Florida

Highlands Elementary School is located on North A Street. It is described as currently having a rating of 2.0 out of 10. This score is based on students' performance on state standardized tests compared to other schools in Florida. [Google]

Last night the principal of Highlands, Ms. Villani, gave a presentation on her school and told us the school was rated a "C" overall and all her staff was committed to making it an "A" school. Nearly 18% of their kids don't show up for class. One of the barriers that was mentioned is that of a "transient population." No one ever wants to admit the real reason why these kids don't do well.

This past November, the tax payers of Palm Beach County passed a referendum with 72% approval for the schools. The money goes toward teacher salaries and the expansion of security and mental health services on campus. The schools portion of the property tax quadrupled for four years beginning this January from $25 per $100,000 of taxable property value currently to $100 per $100,000 of taxable property value. So, the voters did their part to help the schools.

Wow, and I had heard that the ESOl pop was 92% at highland. It is down to 4% white now, incredible. White flight is a real problem in Lake Worth, the high school is like this too as well as all the elem and midd schools. The demographics sure are a changing in this area!

From a purely practical standpoint, young families don't move into this area. They move out west where, supposedly, the good schools are. If you are interested in investing in Lake Worth, your only real hope is the condominiums that will probably dot the landscape at some point. The type of people who move here, are people who appreciate the older homes, but as beautiful as they are, there are homes next door to them that are not so beautiful. This has happened in neighborhoods since people started moving to the suburbs. It's not a Lake Worth problem, it's a cities problem.

It's an immigrant problem and attracting the poor.

It's an illegal immigration INVASION of our school system is what it really is. These kids and their parents have no right to be in our schools, much less our country.

The real problem for you, is your hatred for immigrants. It's going to consume you, and it is never going to stop immigration. Try putting a positive spin on it, or move to Iceland!

We'd like to see citizens.

@7:06--your statement is just so ignorant. No one hates immigrants. What we want are people who are invading this country to obey our laws. What we want is for Democrats to do the same.
This subject, along with many others, "consume" me. This one is the most important at this time for our country. We need to secure our border by every means necessary.
And instead of me, a citizen of this country moving to Iceland, these illegals need to get the hell out of here.

@7:06--another silly comment.

Mental health, our war veterans, prescription drug abuse, heroin, health insurance are just a couple things that also need attention

You're right 8:50. Tell it to the Democrats who have been the stumbling blocks to progress in those areas.

Lynn, the one thing you are never going to see is an end to immigration. It's self-defeating to continue this line of reasoning. As for the school, and you provided the statistics yourself, if it weren't for the immigrants, the school would be empty. There are probably some nice teachers there who would be out of work, and the building would stand there empty for generations. I hate to repeat myself, but the people who are doing well in their native countries, don't come here. I can't remember the last time I heard of a German or Italian coming here to seek citizenship. And then, you incite these half-wits who respond to your blog, who are one brain cell away from becoming dangerous. You're too talented for this sort of thing.

@1:33--gee, thanks. I am talking about ILLEGAL immigration but it would be a darn good idea to have a moratorium on legal immigration right now.
I don't give a hot damn if the school would be empty.
The building would be used for something else and the county would save millions of dollars from educating non-CITIZENS.
There are thousands of people who come here legally from all over the world and we allow around 1 million a year to enter legally.
