September house fire on South B Street, Lake Worth

Comment Up
5 weeks later, it still looks like a bomb hit it

On September 2, 2013, this house caught fire. Nothing is standing but a few outside walls, charred shingles on a dilapidated roof. We have never learned the details of this fire. That night, another house on S B Street was in flames. Were arson investigators called in?

I used to look at this house for years during the election as it is located on the East side of South B Street across from Savior Lutheran Church, my old precinct where we always sign waved. It was a nice family--a woman with her two grown sons, one was disabled. I always remember that she was not too happy with voters parking in front of her house and taking her only parking space. It was reported at the time of the fire that the house was abandoned.

At what point can the city demolish this structure? This is an attractive nuisance, right near a school that is possibly endangering the health, safety and welfare of anyone who might enter the building.

First code would have to open a case on it and I can bet you one has not been opened. You can try and report it to code but 99 times out of a 100 they do nothing.

I grew up right on that block. There was also a two story duplex apartment right behind it. Mrs. Greely's Estate is still the owner according to PAPA. She used to live in the back unit and rent the rest out. Unfortunately, the city can't go onto private property and mow the house down without proper notice. But there is information on PAPA of who to contact. I wonder if this is even in code yet.

September 2? I've had a demolition permit into the building dept. for over 2 months and haven't got it back yet. The company that's going to do the demo, who did a lot of work when the CRA was working on the NSP properties told me that it takes a lot of time to get the approvals and permit. So 6 weeks is not a lot of time. Also, there might be an on-going arson investigation on the home. It would be great if the CM had a magic wand to wave over all our needs and they magically improve, but as grown-ups we know there's no such thing as a magic wand. Let's grow up guys.

All it needs--a few feral cats.

I checked and there is a code case on it and it is going through the system. I wouldn't be patient either if I had to look at it every day, but there is a process and it is going through it.

I'm pretty sure sept was the second fire at this address. 11 years is a long time to wait for improvements. Just sayin
