Sheriff Bradshaw wants more money

Sheriff budget tops $1 billion

He already takes 44% of the County budget

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw requested a $170 million budget boost for the coming year.

That would put the sheriff’s office budget over $1 billion for the first time.

Why it’s important: Spending on the sheriff’s office and county jails absorbs 44 percent of the county’s $2.45 billion general fund budget, which gets about two-thirds of its money from property taxes.

To help balance the budget, former County Administrator Verdenia Baker persuaded the sheriff to reduce his request by $37 million. But without the backing of county commissioners, she failed to get another $20 million from the sheriff.

What she said: “We can’t balance any more on your departments. We are bare bones,” Baker told commissioners at a May budget workshop. “Unless you want me to cut basic services on our side of the table in order to give the sheriff an additional $20 million. We just don’t have it.”

Why the Sheriff needs more money

Basic services are no where near as critical as the Police Budget. The services budget should be slashed.

Trash collection, park management and other government services that are luxuries like pools should be reduced or eliminated so that the police can do their jobs. Don't defund the police!

I agree that we have to listen to the Police Commissioner, and fund
the Police Budget with whatever then need to be safe, and to keep us safe. But for God's sake, don't cut back on Trash Collection. I'm sure there are some frivolous items in the budget that could be reduced, or cut back on, but not keeping the city clean. Rats would get that message in a minute, and then we would have a more expensive problem, not to mention a genuine health crisis.

We are the armpit of Florida worse then Tampa, Daytona even. Big problem here is the Cubans from Miami/Hialeah stealing anything and everything causing insurance to skyrocket and Hatian/Guat/Mex gangs embezzling and dealing drugs. Thank you Mr McVoy fir the Hispanic coloring books big help comrade

We can walk and chew gum at the same time. No need to cut the services the above poster mentioned. (jokingly ,I'm sure ). Cut waste in PBSO.

Yikes, please dont cut the Guatemalan Center! Please dont cut the Haitian Center! Please dont cut the Cuban center (yes, some of this is sarcasm), but they are spending more money on dividing us than protecting us. Special services for special non-American groups are costing money also.

PBSO overtime, medical, insurance, retirement, etc. must be astronomical. Let's see more community policing.

Almost all counties in Florida the elected leaders are piggish anyway to allow all this increase of taxes like they are and they have so many new properties going on the tax rules every single year how many thousands and hundreds of thousands of new properties are added who are paying taxes and yet they keep increasing the taxes year after year after year so much when to taxes ever come down? They're just piggish our elected leaders are not representing the people they're being greedy corrupt and they're just keep taxing us to death so many people are going to start moving out of Florida if they don't do something about all of these high property taxes they need to stop it's getting too high and too out of control and with all the new these new houses and new properties on the tax rolls they should have plenty of money and not have to keep raising taxes every year on other people who have already been living in their properties for many years!
