City Commission Appoints Carla Blockson to fill vacant seat in District 2

Tuesday night under Unfinished Business there was a discussion item of appointing someone to fill the vacancy left by Omari Hardy until the March 2021 election.

It was shocking to learn that the commission bypassed an official process and went directly to a motion to appoint. There was no public commentary because who would have thought they would make a motion for an appointment when it was listed as DISCUSSION. Vice Mayor Amoroso made the motion to appoint Carla Blockson, seconded by Commissioner Scott Maxwell. Even the mayor sounded like she was on Carla Blockson's campaign committee.

This is an unfair process as Carla Blockson is running for that commission seat thus this commission shut out the other candidates by giving Carla Blockson a huge advantage and endorsement over the other candidates, Paola Saray Branda, Mary Ann Rasura, Ryan Olander and Chris McVoy. This is politics at its worst as there is nothing in the Charter that demands they appoint anyone. Don't ask me if I'm pi*sed...democracy at it's "finest."

On Monday December 21 at 5pm, there will be a "Swearing In" of Mrs. Blockson.

Go to 2:54:02 for the start of this discussion and subsequent vote.

I keep getting madder and madder as I ponder over what this commission did. I hope everyone sees the sleaze factor involved here. DIRTY POLITICS. We have candidates running for this office and they've been stepped on and bulldozed over with utter contempt before they even begin their campaign by this act of the commission.
If they were going to appoint someone, it should have been someone NOT running for that office.
We don't need nor do we want political operatives in this city.

It was a no win situation I am sure. The pressure to appoint someone to "represent" district 2 has been called for many, many times. As if a commissioner only votes to improve or represent a specific district.

Then if they do not do it, it was because they wanted total control.

No matter what was done, those who hate will hate. Those who love will love. I think there is more to it than what we will read in the LIBERAL Palm Beach Post. One person was on the commission before. I know I wouldnt want him to be appointed. What have the others done? Have they sat on boards? have they done any work to help improve the city?

Willing to bet there is more to the story than we know.

@6:39--Nothing to do with love and hate. It has everything to do with what is right and just.

This is really shabby stuff. Amoroso made the motion? The candidates running, and I only have heard of two of them, must be really ticked off at this action by Andy, Scott, Pam and Herman. It's bullshit. they have every tight to run a campaign without interference by this dais.

A CPA friend in NYC told me "politics is a dirty business" when I mentiomed I was running for mayor here in Lake Worth in 2009
Appointing a candidate who then becomes an incumbent in the next election creates a disincentive for the other candidates.
It is difficult to find qualified commissioners-This action was un wise and undemocratic

Sad day for Lake Worth and no way to treat fellow LW citizens who are running. Time to change out the dais. My vote will be for Chris.

And don't tell me there wasn't a sunshine violation going on here regarding this appointment. It was known in advance by all 4 commissioners, IMO.

Before I got upset over this, I'd want to know the good and the bad about each candidate....which I do NOT. For all I know, this WAS the best candidate. So..What does Carla Blockson stand for? Is she conservative or liberal? Is she pro real estate or pro green? Is she pro-tourism or against tourism for Lake Worth? Is she against lockdowns and mask wearing, or for them?

I am thankful there are many other people out there that maybe doesn't agree with this decision, but THEY are still the best on the ballot. They were hired to make what they feel is the best choice. If you dont agree with everything they do, and you want them gone, it appears that you are part of the problem. Spoiled brats are usually democrats. I want, I want, I want.

It may not be what I would have done, but THEY thought this was the best move for whatever reason. We cannot give meaning to their actions.

@3:04...give me a break!

Dan--the point here is that the present commission gave her an advantage over every other candidate. She will be on the dais from December 21 until the March election--a big advantage for her, shutting out the other candidates to a large degree. they should have appointed someone NOT running in March. That would have been fair.

So for two months, they couldn't live without a replacement for District 2?

People like freedom of choice thru a fair voting process (not having someone forced on us) - this dirty move will backfire. We also like an underdog - hang in there Chris!

This is outrageous - even board appointments must go through two readings and have public comment.

I don't know Carla Blockson--never have spoken to her in my life. She might be the best qualified person since Trump! LOL...that was for all you liberals. But I sure do remember the letter chief Blockson wrote to the Lake Worth Herald condemning everyone who elected Christopher McVoy instead of his wife. It was revolting. McVoy won with 53.34% of the vote and Carla had 46.66%,
