Lake Worth's Cemetery

Comment Up

WPEC TV-Lake Worth's 'Dirty Secret' Cleaned-Up Story by Peter Schaller

LAKE WORTH, Fla.- Concerned residents say the municipal cemetery in Lake Worth wasn't just overgrown, it was downright disrespectful to the veterans buried there just a few months ago.  But after CBS 12 News got involved, there has been a tremendous turnaround.  There are tangible results after months of close watch and careful clean up at the cemetery off South A Street in the city.  The grass is freshly mowed, and the community's commitment to this cemetery is re-energized.

"It's a good feeling to see that your city administration is responding," said community activist Mark Parrilla.

Thanks Lynn and Mark for all you do to stay on top of the city and even the PBSO to do their jobs, the lack of consistency and follow-through is the problem and has been for so long. We have so many areas of the city that are like the cemetery, uncared for, blighted, crime infested. It is sad that we have to call the news to do such reports just to get results from this city. I saw a few months ago a report from another citizen on South B Street, a Mr. Demps, that was on Channel 5 News reporting about all the lack of codes, blight, and uncared for properties and problems they have over on South B Street, they city sometimes just reacts and does more when they are reported to the news for not doing their jobs, so sad we have to handle things this way to get results, so sad that we do not get instant responses from our elected officials, police, and codes. Its no wonder more citizens don't complain to the new here. Our system is broken here, the leaders, the PBSO, and CM are not responsive to us citizens, they just are not effective.

Mike Bornstein said, "They (work crews) really have stepped up their game, I think going throughout the memorial day event we got a lot of compliments from the public about the cemetery."

He needs to tell the truth. They stepped up their game because there were to be a lot of visitors on Memorial day along with the press. Now it should go back to business as usual.
No one trusts this city management.

11:54 have you ever done anything to help the city or ranting on a blog is as far as you go. personal attacks are hurting this city. please stay focused on the cemetery, fewer complaints from residents.

Anonymous July 8, 2013 at 11:54 your false statement is flawed because I inspect Pinecrest Cemetery weekly at minimum sometimes more than that and it has been in tip top shape well after Memorial Day ceremony up to today. Speak for yourself, their are many of us that are part of the solution who do trust this city's management as it has improved drastically since the past eight years!

Sincerely,
Mark Anthony Parrilla

Mark, the cemetery has been neglected for years. It was not until recently, after bringing its total neglect to light, that the city acted. It is unfortunate that these things continue to happen and activists must get involved to finally get solutions. There are still graves there that no one can find. Mowing should be a normal routine there but our cemetery needs much more than just grass cutting. I know someone who wants to move his buried relatives from there because of the run down conditions that have existed for far too long.

So it is unclear here, who reported this problem with the cemetery to the Channel 12 News? Mark? I am so glad Mark thinks the current admin, CM, elected officials are responsive and doing such a great job, although, most people if you poll them say just the opposite, the city as a whole is in bad shape like the cemetery was. Yes we have a great little beach now and downtown, but the rest of the city looks like hell. When you go to the "people in charge in Lake Worth" no one gets back to you, not the City Manager, nor the mayor or commissioners, and not even the capt of PBSO. Communications to the public by the city is weak at best. Mark count your blessings that you are in so tight that they work with you and you are getting results. Mr. Demps didn't that is why he contacted Chan. 5. Lynn please stay on this topic of Codes, blight and crime, we need our city leaders to be more responsive and "to get the job done." Yes, it would be nice to be able to trust the city government and people, only if they would respond and show they are doing something, if only they would listen and showed that they cared. Maybe we need a mayor like Mark in this city who cares and responds to citizens.

Now that we've made sure the dead people have a nice clean environment, can we do the same for those of us who are not dead yet? Thank you.
