Hyatt Place Delray Beach - A beautiful 4 story hotel

Comment Up

Yesterday the Negative NO people attacked the 4 story Pelican in Miami Beach. We keep hearing the same old argument from them--a developer must have 65 feet in order to build on to the Gulfstream property or they need 65 feet to build in order to make money. The opposition is telling you if we don't allow this footage, gosh anything could go there, an assisted living facility for heaven's sake or the dreadful idea of a place for Seniors. They will tell you because we like our small town charm that we love living in ghettos. You will hear it all. The one I like best is that we are shhhhhhhhhhh, "special interests."

In the past, I have featured a few small hotels:  One in Key West, Sausalito and Williamsburg and yesterday in South Beach.  Today it is a hotel right down the road.

The Hyatt Place Delray Beach is a four story hotel located in the Arts District of downtown Delray Beach within 1 mile of the Gold Coast and its beautiful beaches and walking distance to Atlantic Avenue shopping, dining and entertainment districts. It is conveniently accessible from I-95 and located close to Palm Beach International Airport, Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and The Ft. Lauderdale Cruise Port.

It features 134 exquisitely appointed guest rooms (about 28 - 30 more rooms than the Gulfstream had) and offers a full service lobby bar, outdoor pool, Jacuzzi and 24 Hour Fitness Center. Guests can stroll the area avenues enjoying the outdoor bistros, boutiques galleries and nightlife as well as the eclectic culture Delray Beach has to offer.

If the Hyatt, one of our premier hotel entities, can build 4 stories, then we know any developer can build 4 stories. We can't help it if the owners of the Gulfstream paid too much for the property and got caught in the financial meltdown. The owners have dragged out the foreclosure process for 40 months now. Why do some in this city believe the hotel is our problem to solve? The foreclosure needs to come to an end, the property needs to be sold and then find a hotel that is ready, able and willing to build within our Charter Amendment of 45 feet.

Don't get duped by those who are using the Gulfstream Hotel as an excuse to vertically grow our downtown. Don't be duped when they tell you heights will only affect a few parcels. The LDR's and Comprehensive Plan can be changed on a 3 to 2 vote. And the dais did just that, the reason for the citizen initiative. The Charter specifies rules that can't be changed by politicians.

Vote YES on the Charter Amendment 2

A human-scale Hyatt! It's nice looking. The more 3-4 story hotels I see, the more I realize that high rises would be horrible for Lake Worth.

Good Morning Lynn,
Can you tell me exactly the height of the Hyatt Place in Delray Beach? You will find that it's higher than 45 feet total. I am glad you have brought up Delray Beach and their ability to have smart growth in it's downtown. They have done a very good job with their setbacks on new construction. Please see page 39 of their Master Plan and how they have two or three stories close to sidewalk and taller stories set back farther. http://mydelraybeach.com/sites/default/files/assets/departments/planning%20and%20zoning/Chapter%202.pdf

A 65-foot max hotel-only building only with the proper setbacks and design, which will be in place, only only six possible parcel will enhance the area and promote tourism to our great City. Thank you.

Respectfully, Colleen Rinaldi

I doubt if anyone at the Hyatt can tell you the exact height. I believe, however, that they can go to 3 feet higher than what the referendum is proposing. You would have to go into their building department and look at the plans. They will tell you, however, there are 3 floors of hotel rooms with the downstairs being a lobby, etc.

You know, this referendum is NOT about the Gulfstream Hotel even though you all want to scare people into believing that it is and something might happen to our historic building. Nothing will happen to it.

Developing higher in our downtown would be just the beginning of developing higher throughout our city. That's what we believe--because the charter allows 65 and 100 feet--obviously you think it is all about 6 parcels. Developers should build on Dixie Highway. Let's get that commercial district going. Downtown, a developer can build a 45 foot separate building for a hotel. If the Hyatt did it, anyone can do it.

Thanks for your comment.

Imagine how much nicer our downtown wuld look if this had been built there instead of the Lucerne.
We need the 45' height limit to protect this entire downtown corridor from realtors and developers because we have an "Historic" Board that will allow anything that a developer wants including demolition of historic structures,as have past boards, and a Commission who will approve whatever developers need to satisfy their desire for maximun profits.
This is the reason that the Charter Amendment was proposed, eagerly signed, certified and is now on the ballot-to rectify the Commission's raising the height limit against the will of their constituents.
Vote Yes on Height Limits on March 12th.

Lynn,
In the last 100 years in LW there have only been maybe a dozen buildings over 50' tall. The opposite of high rise is what? Low-rise, correct? A high rise building is building over 10 stories. We only have 2 buildings in LW 100' tall. The Gulfstream & The LW Towers. Before the last time the voters voted for the height to put in our Charter to attract development, there were no height limits. Only a dozen or so buildings at or over 50' in 100 years and 65' & 100' limits in our Charter for almost 20 years. And now with the new Comp plan that has reduced the heights in all but less than 5% of of the entire city and the remaining part is staying as it has been for almost 2 decades do we really believe that in the next couple of decades we're going to turn the hotel district into Gotham City?
We all agree this city has had leadership we didn't like of trust but even with all those least favorite leaders our low rise, charming downtown and cottage neighborhoods intact proves that our form of government works. Let's respect our past and not limit or future. Our system has served us well for our first century it will serve us well in our second century.

You are right. people don't trust politicians and why should they? We got The Lucerne, didn't we? Look what you all did? Kicked the entire P^Z board off and appointed friends of development so that you could change the comp plan and get heights higher. You spurred us on.

See ya at the polls. And maybe if we're lucky, the good guys win. :)

The Hyatt Place in Delray pictued is on a huge 1 block of land so it can be built lower. We don't have any land that would fit this hotel close to the intercoastal.
Plus believe me no one including Hyatt is going to build in a down market location like Lake Worth. We can only dream.

WHY do we have to build so high to have hotels around here? There are many examples of lovely luxury "boutique" hotels all over the US and the world.

Greg Rice, you have some nerve even showing your face in this town. You are a law breaker. You should be removed from your board . We don't need liars like YOU making important decisions in Lake Worth! Move down to Boynton beach! You can live at the tip top of one of their HUGE EMPTY Bldgs down there!.Go look at the corner of Woolbright road and Federal Hwy. This is the gross future that Greg Rice, Loretta Sharpe, Wes Blackman and Mary Lindsey want for us.These people could care less about Lake Worth. As long as their POCKETS GET FILLED,THEY WILL ALL BE HAPPY!!!!
