Message from Commissioner Mulvehill

Two of the three National Historic Landmark Districts in Florida are in jeopardy of losing their status or revising their boundaries because of demolished structures, new structures and incompatible structures. The information below was excerpted from the National Park Service. Note the added emphasis to the St. Augustine and Pensacola listings.

This is why I have so much concern about incompatible construction here in Lake Worth . The City of Lake Worth is ranked 5th out of 38 cities in Palm Beach County on the National Register of Historic Places for its historic districts and buildings. We must be conscientious when considering height and new construction, as well as demolition of existing structures.

It was recommended by the state’s historic division that we apply for the Preserve America designation which we will be applying for in early 2010. A Preserve America designation recognizes communities that:
  • Protect and celebrate their heritage
  • Use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization;
  • Encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage through tourism programs.
Our history is part of what makes Lake Worth unique and distinct and we must work to protect it.

Suzanne Mulvehill
