What about home owners? What if we have no mortgage? How do we get free stuff? SOME people cannot afford their rent because they are wasteful spenders.

Some people are wasteful spenders, it's true, but they are not usually the ones who can't pay their rent.
If you pay attention to the statistics, concerning the number of people who die from drug overdoses, and add to those statistics, the number who don't die, but just keep hanging on somehow, you may start to wonder how long we can continue to exist as a free society.
And then, all of the polls show that the majority of people are for legalizing marijuana, you start to get an idea that we have really gone off the rails as free people. Free people don't do drugs.
People can't cope. Whether it's the news media, the virus, the government, or social media, we better get a handle on it, because we are "Slouching towards Gomorrah", in the words of Robert Bork!
