Merchants need to stop enabling criminals

Comment Up

I witnessed a theft this morning. I was just getting out of my car at the Dollar Store downtown when this guy came rushing out of the store with a 12 pack of beer in his right hand. He was running fast towards Lake Avenue, making a left hand turn from the store towards Bryant Park.  He was about 5' 10", red shirt, dark Bermuda shorts, curly light brown or blondish hair.

When I entered the store, one of the customers at the cash register asked me if I had seen the guy. "Yes," I said, "What is the store going to do about it?"  The clerk pointed out the store manager and I repeated what I saw.  Apparently they are used to petty theft there and don't report it.  "Why not," I asked. He then informed me that they would have cop cars there all day long. I asked about a security camera in the store..."Don't you have a video that could possibly ID this thief?"  They were not the least bit interested...just the cost of doing business, I guess. I did have to say that I was astounded at their disinterest and blasé attitude.

Merchants should not be enablers to this sort of crime or it will escalate. Their attitude was, "It won't do any good to call the police."  I called Commissioner Amoroso who said he would take care of it.

Lynn, perhaps since this burns your ass, you should volunteer and patrol the downtown area and help combat crime.

Anonymous, since you are such a wise guy, perhaps YOU can become a victim. I would think that crime in our city would "burn your ass" and every other citizen's ass too... Unless yours is made of lead.

too bad there wasn't an able bodied guy to run after this punk and tackle him until police arrived. Are there any men left?

andy said the same about dylan harrison--they are taken care of it---the same time dylan and his employees made contributions to his election and a lot more

This guy is probably robbing homes, also. We as a community, which includes the merchants that lake Worth bends over for, need to watch out for each other and report crime.

You're right Helen, the big fat mouth loser also used to care much about LW. However, what we have is the legacy created by the likes of Jennings, Golden, Mulvehill and Stanton. Those are the people responsible for creating the mess we're in. The four horsemen of the apocalypses single handed made LW the dumping ground for the scum of the earth, and it will continue to be that way as long as we have bleeding hearts wanting to accommodate the POOR people instead of trying to attract good classy business into the area and create a pleasant atmosphere like Delray did, OH! my God I mentioned the D word, probably will be hit by lightning today.

I let the above anonymous post go through even though it is full of lies...not one statement is true. I already wrote a blog on how we got in the state that we are in. It was not because of any of these people. One person, Cara Jennings, does not make a poor city.

http://www.lynn-a.blogspot.com/2013/04/lake-worth-still-working-on-land.html

It was all you "classy" people who came into our city and bought up houses to rent out to the poor--that attracted more poor and more illegals. Look to Jeff Clemens for voting for an immigration center...Stanton ended that. Look to the churches that are attracting the homeless and illegals. Look to all of that. Then look to the impossible to get our city back into shape and rid ourselves of the "scum."

Until we clean up the neighborhoods, nothing will help our city. Businesses will come here because our downtown is supported by out-of-towners. The only deterrent for businesses is the cost of rent--it's not even the utilities.

Oh, and get the crime under control. It is now running away like a fast train.

Ramiccio and Romano, slum lords like John and Greg Rice, did more to destroy this city than anyone before or after.Ever heard of demolition by neglect?Ex city attorney Larry Karns was the go to guy for shady land deals in this town. They helped their friends like Bo Allen get their hands on sweetheart property deals. Bo Allen even threatened old, retired widows to get their property. There were no rules for their friends who were raping this city. They allowed people like the Sheppards to steal public, waterfront property.People like Wes Blackman and Loretta Sharpe handed out variances like candy. They allowed the Lucerne to blatantly lie it's way into our down town.No public parking as promised, and three stories taller than it was supposed to be. Ever wonder why there are NO setbacks for the condos two feet away from the road on federal?!Ask Phil Spinelli about some of the great property deals he got while on P&Z.These people are still lurking, still trying to bring back this lawless behavior of the past.I don't agree with everything Jennings did, but at least she ,Mulvehill and Golden were HONEST.

Agree Lynn, this company probably has a policy not to stop petty theft b/c (read the papers) if someone gets hurt even the criminal they will face a lawsuit. But, they should call the cops as should you if you see a crime.

But, sadly my calls to PBSO non emergency line, which used to get a good response, no longer work. I called the line recently about some people walking down the middle of my street with a stolen shopping cart. The operator could have cared less and no PBSO ever appeared and the shopping cart is now abandoned on Federal Hwy which was my original concern.

PBSO say they want you to call every time you see something, even something petty, but they don't respond any more.

If PBSO does not respond, then we as residents must keep calling our commissioners and complain. We pay way too much money for protection--more money than we can afford, I might add, and we must bug our elected to take action. If we don't, nothing will ever change. If a commissioner sounds disinterested or gives you the WRONG answer, threaten him with a NO vote the next time around-- get him where he might understand that you are serious. It is time that we start taking charge of where we live. These people work for us.
