DeSantis Offers Historic Property Tax Savings to Florida Homeowners
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis used a Sunday interview to argue for a major property tax break that could leave more money in the hands of homeowners instead of government offices. He said the state is in a strong position because Florida has no income tax, a relatively light tax load, and a budget culture that has kept spending in check. That may sound almost old-fashioned in today’s political world, where too many leaders treat taxpayer dollars like a free buffet. DeSantis said the goal is simple: make homeownership less of a burden and give families real relief...A Bigger Homestead Exemption Could Mean Real Savings.
The plan DeSantis discussed would raise Florida’s homestead exemption from $50,000 to $250,000, which he said could wipe out property taxes for roughly 60 percent of homeowners. He framed it as a direct win for residents who have watched home values climb while tax bills have followed close behind.
DeSantis also pointed out that local governments have seen huge growth in property tax revenue, rising from $32 billion in 2019 to $60 billion now. That is a big jump by any measure, and it gives the lie to the idea that taxpayers must keep footing the bill forever just because government got used to the money...Spending Discipline Still Matters.
DeSantis said Florida’s state budget will reflect four straight years of spending reductions, and he tied that discipline to the state’s ability to offer tax relief. He argued that if homestead property tax revenue were reduced or even eliminated, local budgets would simply return to around 2021 or 2022 levels, not collapse into chaos as the usual tax-and-spend crowd might suggest.
He also noted that the state has surplus money set aside and wants to create a fund to issue grants to local governments. In other words, Florida is trying something radical in modern politics: spending less, keeping the lights on, and letting taxpayers keep more of what they earn.

Your buddies Mcvoy and crew are strongly against this go figure. Lololol
"my buddies"? anonymous @10:03. I would wager to say that the entire city commission is against this and many have spoken against as well as Ron DeSantis in general and any Republican. They have to fund their wasteful spending.
You can bet the city and the county is going to find ways to collect that money...or maybe they'll just reduce police, fire, library, parks and road services and give all the people who voted for the cuts something else to complain about.
$150,000 homestead exemption. It goes on the November ballot and needs 60% to pass.
Oh, it will pass. In Florida? Home of the Low Information Voter? It will definitely pass.
If it passes, it is because the governor is giving all the information anyone would need to make an informed decision. Local goverments will be forced to reduce waste and abandon unnecessary projects. Maybe they can get rid of the commission's $6,000 yearly car allowance.
Oh, they'll get rid of a lot more than that. And you'll be the first in line to complain about the degradation of services and how garbage is piling up and how crime is rampant. But denying that $6000 car allowance will be totally worth it to you.
@9:18...to set the record straight, I don't complain about LWB--waste of time. Lake Worth will be smart and reduce department budgets across the board if thay have to and work within the law. Crime is already bad enough. Democrats will blame everyone else other than themselves if they are depending upon homsteaded property taxes, if that passes in Nov...that is their MO.
It's millions of dollars for a city the size of LWB and it impacts EVERYONE, Democrats and Republicans alike. You've already set the record for complaining about the pool. And your car burglary will be small potatoes compared to what will be allowed to happen with defunding the police. Yep, it's funny that the people who really did wind up defunding the police are the same people who whined about it for years.
But, yippee, that car allowance will be gone!
There is too much waste in government local state federal just too much waste it's a good move give the money back to the taxpayers and lower our property taxes they are way too high and unsustainable for the common person and there's too much waste in government anyway they are taking millions every year extra in new homes going on the tax rolls but they never reduce taxes they just keep spending and spending and finding more ways to spend and waste our money!
I am voting to lower our taxes!
Get more efficient, city of LWB. This has nothing to do with my car burglary but everything to do with cutting expenses///not defunding the police. Wild @12;53. LOL
When you take away the money that funds the police, police have to make cuts...in personnel, equipment and pay. Less police means more crime. Like 1 + 1 = 2. It's not "wild." It's simple math.
But your comprehension level is EXACTLY what DeSantis is counting on and it's EXACTLY why this will pass. Low information voters and, quite frankly, low intelligence voters only see this as more money in their pockets and less "waste" in government.
But be assured, you and the others will be complaining the loudest when the crime rate goes up or the library is closed on weekends or the garbage service is reduced. But then it will be too late.
Maybe you can add an evening edition of "Crime City of Lake Worth Beach." You'll certainly have enough material for it.
Maybe you can start being efficient and reduce your city department budgets to cover whatever money you may not get if this ballot initiative passes. Garbage service will not be reduced nor will PBSO but you could renogotiate the contract that is way too high. Oh, and get back to that car allowance...you can start with yourselves and stop the fear tactics. Reduce your $216 million budget or whatever it is now. All Democrats ever want to do is grab the money. You've raised the electric and water and service charges have been added. Start looking at salaries, benefits, insurance and overtime.
Did you ever notice how nasty and arrogant Democrats are? Money grabbers who want to tax you to death.
Here we go with the Fear Mongering making up fantasies good job comrade. Lololol
Preach brother
The abolish police comrades are now stuck up for cops? Lolololol. Sad sacks!
The Dems just want more money they are greedy and corrupt and they take in so much tax money whatever happens with all this money and then they say it's for schools or police but they honestly don't care about anything like that at all although they will use those excuses to just keep taxing us to death! They are just so corrupt! Greedy and self-serving! Look at Nancy Pelosi after 39 years do you think she really cared about the people?
